Superior Carpet Cleaning doesn’t just eradicate dirt; it also eliminates the impersonal nature and harsh cleaning practices of bigger carpet-cleaning businesses. Because the company is small, the owner is able to oversee most of the jobs the technicians perform, ensuring each carpet, furniture, and rug fiber they work on is left spotless. And the formulas and equipment they bring along are all environmentally friendly, so newly cleansed floors are left safe for kids, pets, and impromptu handstands to impress the neighbors.
In 2011, owners Daniel Gualtieri and Samuel Vulcano purchased Swanson Cleaners with the intention of maintaining the Swanson family’s 67-year tradition of reliable, quality dry cleaning. The versatile cleaning experts demonstrate their years of experience by banishing stains and marks from clothes ranging from sweaters and ties to simple two-piece suits and their formal cousins the 12-piece chicken dinners.
Family-owned for five generations and 116 years, Smith Housewares and Restaurant Supply stocks residential and commercial kitchens with approximately 18,000 items, including a wide variety of food equipment. Patrons can paint egg-glaze masterpieces with a 1-inch boar-bristle pastry brush ($2.82) or don a chef’s hat ($8.99) to collect free sticky buns from passersby who mistake them for the Pillsbury Doughboy. Alternatively, customers can dunk dough in a 12-cup S/S deep fryer ($77.99) or dip delicacies in chocolate melted with a electric multi fondue set ($71.99) to craft homemade sweets. Hops and yeast from a True Brew Irish stout ingredient kit ($43.89) ferment into 5 gallons of full-bodied ale (equipment not included). Smith Housewares and Restaurant Supply also hosts a substantial array of industrial service equipment for restaurants or wistful home kitchens dreaming of the big time.
Heating and air-conditioner installation has traditionally been a male-dominated field—that is, until Suzanne Kondra-DeFuria busted onto the scene. As one of only two women in New York to earn her heating license, Suzanne proved she could tune-up gas furnaces and improve a home’s air quality with the best of them. Getting the respect she deserved didn’t come easy, though. When she took the reins from Homer Potter, who started Potter Heating and Air Conditioning in 1944, she found that many of the company’s longtime customers and employees were unaccustomed to dealing with a powerful female executive. By putting her extensive education, experience, and Golden Rule leadership style to use, however, she eventually earned respect from her colleagues and clients, and she even became the first woman to serve as president of the Syracuse Heating and Air Conditioning Contractors Association. In fact she’s so tough that even while battling cancer she continued to grow the business and sit on the board of directors for multiple charitable institutions, including St. Joseph’s Hospital and AIDS Community Resource.
Today, she continues to channel her passion and impossibly strong work ethic into helming Potter Heating and Air Conditioning. Her team of seasoned experts travel to homes and commercial businesses with one goal in mind: to maximize comfort. To achieve this, they do everything from installing new furnaces and state-of-the-art Bryant air conditioners to fabricating their own ductwork to improve a home’s energy efficiency. And they even maintain a 24-hour emergency service, meaning they’re always available to handle any issues that arise or to remove any half-man, half-dust creatures found lurking in the ducts.
Since its founding by William Bright Sr. and William Dunk Sr. in 1927, Dunk & Bright Furniture has grown from a modest storefront to a 100,000-square-foot showroom. The store's staff—accredited by the Interior Design Society and American Society of Interior Designers—leads visitors through a maze of bedroom and living room sets, mattresses, and other pieces by brands such as Ashley, Harden, and aspenhome. A separate 1,000,000-cubic-foot warehouse stores the bulk of the shop's inventory, which also includes wall-to-wall carpeting, area rugs, shutters and blinds, and enchanted mirrors. Dunk & Bright delivers purchases free of charge within 200 miles of Syracuse.
In central New York, the artisans at Brennan Stained Glass Studio work with extreme heat and traditional techniques to craft elaborate stained-glass windows and art pieces. In addition to producing the stained-glass dome atop Alexandria Bay's Boldt Castle, the team has designed and installed windows for thousands of churches, temples, schools, hospitals, restaurants, and office buildings. The team also instructs students in the art of stained glass with its own unique approach. Lessons include basic instruction in the copper-foil method to create window panels and sun catchers. Students may also learn how to design their own custom fused-glass plates so they can stop arguing over dish ownership with their dogs.
