Though he was destined to become an ophthalmologist, Dr. William Ellis didn't always have a clear vision for his career. As an undergraduate at UC Berkeley, he studied electrical engineering, focusing on field and wave transmission—lasers, in other words. It was a worthy prelude to his eventual specialty, since after completing medical school and his residency, though, Dr. Ellis realized the enormous potential of lasers—via the revolutionary new procedure known as LASIK—to help his patients see more clearly. Since then, he has performed more than 68,000 LASIK surgeries and even helped pioneer Epi-LASIK, a version of the procedure that doesn't use blades to make the incision. At his practices throughout the Bay Area, Dr. Ellis continues to take pride in performing every LASIK procedure, giving patrons the gift of clear eyesight so they can finally make out the tiny poems written between the lines of barcodes.
Ryan Dempsey, the founder and licensed acupuncturist of Marinwood Community Acupuncture, first crossed paths with the treatment when he traveled to China while earning his undergraduate degree in history. As a part of the National Youth Leadership Forum on Integrated Medicine, he saw firsthand the integration of Western and Chinese medicine in several of the country’s large public hospitals, where he gained a deep appreciation for the culture and history.
But it wasn’t until Ryan experienced a severe shoulder injury that he had personal experience with acupuncture. Faced with the idea of surgery, he instead thought back to his experiences and sought out treatment for himself. Eventually, with treatment and rehabilitation, he recovered fully and was inspired to dedicate his career to Chinese medicine. Now, practicing integrative Chinese medicine with a specialty in women’s health and obstetrics, he runs Marinwood Community Acupuncture, where he invites patrons to seek treatment for conditions relating to areas such as reproductive, neurologic, or sleep. He offers both private and communal acupuncture sessions, as well as herbal medicine (sourced from a company in Boulder, Colorado), directing the best course of treatment and action based on review of patients' medical history and concerns.
Max Muscle found its feet in 1990, when a group of athletes set out to build a brand of supplements that would effectively boost performance. From this concept grew a national sports-nutrition franchise, with a spectrum of supplements that helps to nurture weight loss, maintain overall health, bolster muscle mass, and build endurance for marathon games of Go Fish. At more than 100 locations across the United States and through an expansive online store, Max’s muscle mavens dispense multivitamins and protein shakes to both solo customers and affiliated personal trainers. Max Muscle locations also aid customers in beginning their wellness journey through nutrition consultations, where certified staff members draft nutrition plans tailored to clients’ specific bodily needs and lifestyle.
Licensed acupuncturist R.H. Leach, who has a PhD in oriental medicine, treats not only humans at Lotus Medical & Health Clinic, but also various breeds of dogs. She helps heal adults, children, and pooches, specifically treating their allergies to foods, plants, or cat enemies, with Eastern-medicine techniques such as acupuncture, acupressure, and homeopathic work. Leach uses wellness consultations to determine the proper course of treatment, but she has noticed throughout her decade of experience that children and dogs tend to respond best to acupressure, not acupuncture, techniques.
Health and beauty go hand-in-hand, according to expert Suruchi Chopra. That's because the skin is the only fragile barrier humans have between the outside world and their most precious belonging: themselves. At Suruchis, Chopra works to protect both inside and out with in-depth health, weight, and diet analyses that result in plans for wellness-minded lifestyle changes. That's in addition to facials, which renew the body on the outside as meal plans and weight-loss regimens work on the inside, where only superheroes with x-ray vision can see.
