Sharing a deep passion for the outdoors, the staff at Demo Sport engineers aquatic and alpine fun with an inventory of high-performance sporting equipment for seasons both hot and cold. In the summer months, customers can prepare for riding ocean waves or churning placid lakes into giant whirlpools with Suftech standup paddleboards, Hyperlite and Ronix wakeboards, and accessories such as gloves, boots, and life jackets. Once snow has blanketed nearby peaks, athletes carve the powdery slope atop skis from Rossignol, K2 or V?lkl and snowboards from Burton and Never Summer, Demo Sport also carries trek bikes and Lucky scooters, both great methods for exploring urban environments without paying pigeons' outrageous tour prices.
Rob Spear's love affair with bikes began at the age of 13. Since that sunny day in the 1980s, he’s spent 23 years learning the ins and outs of bikes, having worked with Discovery Masters National Cycling Team and with the University of Washington’s aerodynamic laboratory. At the one-man shop known as Spearhead Bicycle Excellence, he channels those skills into building and repairing bikes so that they function as a seamless extension of their rider, whether through proper fittings that allow for correct posture or tune-ups that keep parts working together correctly. Rob doesn’t keep any bikes in stock, instead opting to build custom bikes for clients who want an impartial expert or require a comically large front wheel.
At Breaking Away Bicycles, cycling enthusiasts and mechanics facilitate two-wheeled joyrides with a full line of bikes and accessories, repair services, and custom bike fittings. Apparel from brands such as Hincapie, Louis Garneau, and Castelli prepares cyclists for safe road riding and off-road jaunts through nature. In the repair shop, mechanics service bicycles of all makes and models, inspecting shocks and custom-fitting bikes to conform to the needs of riders or earth-dwelling former mermaids. For those in search of a new ride, Breaking Away Bicycle rents out mountain bikes and sells cycles from brands such as Ellsworth, Raliegh, Blue and KHS.
As a surfer and cyclist, Marcel Mijares was drawn to the Pacific Coast many years ago; since then, he’s found little reason to leave. A native of Venezuela, Mijares spoke only Spanish when he made the move, but his love of the Bay Area fueled his drive to acquire the English language and graduate with honors from the Lincoln School of Business. Now, as the owner of High Trails Cyclery, Mijares combines his passion with his determination, sharing both with riders in the heart of Russian Hill. He leads a team of cycling experts equipped to repair cycles and perform tune-ups, overhauls, and bike fittings. Team members also share their expertise during maintenance classes, in which they teach students to care for their own cycles and understand the dangers of trying to change a bicycle's transmission fluid.
