After partnering with one of his scissors-handed mentors, Connie, the two set up a shop to replicate the sophistication and gentility of early 20th-century barbershops.

Dark, hardwood floors, an old metal cash register, and large wood cabinets fill the retro-chic space with a sense of nostalgia. The shop strives to combine old-world charm with modern techniques and services. At the end of the day, Virile Barber & Shop is a comfortable place where men can get a haircut, shave, or manicure among the rich scents of wood and leather-bound mustaches.

Inside the monochromatic confines of Plush Salon, a team of hairstylists stands over a row of white leather chairs, doting on heads with shears and brushes laden with professional hair color. Voted the best salon by White Plains Patch readers in 2012, the beauty haven is helmed by co-owners Kristy Rotonde and Anthony Fidanza, who collaborated on the design of the savvy interior, complete with 6-inch personal TVs at every styling station.

Master coiffeur Vasken Demirjian, a L’Oréal Color Specialist, mans a fleet of European-trained stylists so adept at pampering tresses and faces that Westchester magazine anointed their work the Best of the Decade. The stylists use organic colors and hair care products whenever possible, but also incorporate traditional colors for locks with textures and colors that don't lend themselves well to organic treatments. Along with salon services, the staff beautifies clients with Jane Iredale makeup applications for any occasion, the acceptance of an assistant professorship at a prestigious clown college being no exception. They also render the experience more pleasurable by treating each guest to cups of organic coffee or tea.

Products by Bumble and Bumble and Moroccanoil strapped to their utility belts, the stylists at Salon 33 South tint tresses, fight frizz, and create luscious body waves.
