Envy Rentals corrals a seaworthy stable of crafts designed for adrenaline-laced sessions of high-flying aquatic acrobatics, windswept cruising, or drifting away a lazy morning. Sporting wakeboards, wake skates, and tow ropes, each 2007 Mastercraft X-2 wake boat plucks potential boarders from the land for attempted thrills and certain water-caused chills during a half-day of wake thrashing. Hauling riders across the currents with the power of 310 horses, Envy’s Mastercrafts boast a 750-pound ballast capacity that fills and empties in fewer than five minutes for quick trades between mountainous water ramps and speedy travel times. Post-boarding, kick back and absorb fresh air and cool breezes to the thumping beats from a 300-watt JL CD system, Sirius satellite radio, iPod connectivity, or the boat’s onboard a capella group.

Carlsbad Lagoon's on-water adventures take place at a private beach area lined by palm trees. Here, wakeboards, waverunners, and water skis speed across the water’s surface, bouncing into the air with each wave. The fleet also boasts more leisurely watercraft, such as kayaks and aqua cycles—oversized, buoyant tricycles that fulfill the dream of every child who drove his big wheel into the bathtub.

Of course, Carlsbad Lagoon doesn’t leave its customers to paddle hopelessly in circles. The staff includes instructors, who teach the basics of the various on-water activities. The aquatic educators also run a children's camp.

The staff at Unified Team Diving can transform someone who's never scuba dived before into a professional diver with their expansive menu of classes and courses. In their onsite heated swimming pool, instructors orient students to the world of breathing and exploring underwater. Combined with classroom sessions, they can award their students various certifications such as recreational diver, technical diver, diving instructor, and overhead diver, which includes cave diving. They conduct their training dives at the nearby La Jolla shores, which offer shallow wrecks, walls, and kelp for students to explore.

Since taking over and renaming the surf-and-turf shop in 2003, owner Sandra Dee continues to provide beach-goers with seaside accessories and rentals. Some aquanauts glide harmoniously over surging swells of water with one-day surfboard rentals, and others may opt to helm oceanic rocket ships coincidentally shaped like kayaks as they coast through local mounds of churning foam. Alternatively, landlubbers can stick to the shoreline, travel through town, or start a short-term bike gang with daily bicycle rentals. Though not included in this deal, Raw Skin Surf Shack also offers apparel and accessories for adults, kids, and pets.

The team at Paddle Planet enables aquatic exploration with its shiny fleet of watersport vessels from brands by the likes of Naish, Starboard, Amundson, and Ocean Kayak. Patrons can purchase or rent their desired mode of transportation before they embark on muscle-powered paddleboard voyages, master the tides on a soft-top surfboard, or glide across flat-water lagoons in a tandem kayak. Paddle Planet's aquatic experts also teach first-time paddlers the basics, and lead yoga lessons atop standup paddleboards. While enjoying the tranquil lagoon waters of Agua Hedionda, yoga students hop on floating mats and practice poses that give them the balance and focus needed to tightrope walk across power lines.

A surfing high-school teacher sounds like the stuff of wacky summer comedies. But for Rob Dubin, a teacher and surfer of several decades' standing, it's long been a reality. After discovering the core-strengthening sport during a visit to Hawaii, Dubin added standup paddleboarding to his areas of expertise and founded SUPstanding Paddle to share its serene pleasures. He draws on time spent on the waters of Costa Rica, Java, and Morocco to help his students build confidence, increase balance, and identify the spot where dolphins most like to have their bellies rubbed with a paddle.
