With 30 years of teaching experience and a background in dance, athletics, and intensive care, owner Virginia Nicholas founded Moving Breath Pilates in 1995. The clean, serene space, which is also home to the Pilates Core Integration teacher-training program, offers a variety of 55-minute sessions priced according to size and instructor. The specialty group classes focus mainly on mat exercises, not equipment, making them ideal for beginners. Jim Keegan, the founder of Yoga Nirvana, draws on his studies in kinesiology and biomechanics to help visitors obtain inner peace and healthy bodies. Before opening his own studio, he served a nine-year stint as the head yoga teacher at Arizona State University and continues his teaching career through international workshops. Jim and his fellow instructors guide students through classes such as Ashtanga for beginners, Kundalini yoga, power yoga, and mediation. Sore students can ease their tired muscles by scheduling an appointment with the studio's licensed massage therapist. In addition to group classes, Jim offers private lessons and whisks pupils away on all-inclusive yoga retreats.
At Bombay Spice Grill, you don't have to grab a table to enjoy the spices and sauces of Indian cuisine. Instead, Executive Chef Sunil Kumar designed a menu full of Indian meats, tofu, curries, and toppings that can be customized into a flavorful meal-on-the-go. Though the sauces come in traditional varieties such as curry, tikka masala, spinach, and vindaloo, the preparation veers from the methods of India to create healthier dishes. Chefs eschew cooking with ghee—Indian clarified butter—and instead use olive oil for heart-healthy wraps, sandwiches, salads, and bowls. And though wraps come with a slice of freshly baked naan or roti bread, clients can opt to make their dish gluten-free by swapping out bread for quinoa or rice. Guests can even customize their dish to be vegetarian and vegan, with ingredients clearly denoted on the menu. And to pair with a main entree, they can grab traditional Indian sides such as samosas and rice pudding.
A sprawling mandala design covers the floor of Plaza de Anaya's main dance studio, welcoming dancers in with warmth and beauty. Amid that artistic setting, seasoned instructors teach dance styles from around the world that include belly dancing, barefoot flamenco, and anaya tribal dancing. Cultural gatherings are an important part of the school's community, which is why the studio also schedules an array of monthly events and workshops that might be dance-based or include henna tattoos that dance when you pinch them.
As a college student and avid climber, Erick Geryol would work at a local pizzeria crafting pies every day after rock climbing. A decade later, he returned to purchase the then-unoccupied space where the pizzeria once stood and opened Boulders on Broadway—a salute to his dual loves of climbing and mountain biking. Not one to ignore his culinary roots, he put specialty pizzas at the center of the large menu, which are now served alongside more than 30 beers on draft and more than 70 in bottles. Visitors are invited to lock their bikes up inside and take a seat on the patio or at the lively bar, which frequently hosts special beer events, trivia, and Tip Your Bartender Night, which is every night.
