The chefs and bartenders at Garlic & Shots ply patrons with a menu of hearty meats and seafood with garlic flavors, as well as a drink list that includes 101 types of shots, local brews, and more than 30 types of wine. Steamed mussels ($10) open like bivalve tulips in the sun while bathing in a broth of shallots, garlic butter, and Four Peaks' 8th Street ale, and a pair of kobe-beef sliders ($13) rides mini brioche buns into mouth caverns. Sweet balsamic glaze or creamy béchamel sauce adorns pan-seared chicken breasts ($17), and garlic blue cheese crowns the 8-ounce filet mignon ($24).

Pollack Tempe Cinemas

It’s hard to believe that Pollack Tempe Cinemas was once just another small, drab movie theater in danger of replaced by the newest megaplex. What a difference a few years make. Once Pollack management took over, they completely redesigned the theater to better reflect the Golden Age of Hollywood cinema. Autographed headshots, life-size cutouts of celebrities, and vintage movie posters all contribute to the classical vibe that permeates the theater today. Though most theaters with this sort of eclectic flair survive on a steady diet of indie and foreign flicks, Pollack’s movies are generally blockbusters and other films with mainstream appeal. On any given weekend, the theater attracts thousands of guests eager to enjoy second-run films at steep discounts and pose for pictures next to life-sized models of their favorite movie stars or second favorite key grips.

Dance can be healing. Studio founder Christie knows this better than anyone, having turned to sensual dance as an outlet after being diagnosed with a brain tumor. Her newfound practice not only set her on a healthier path, it also made her feel more confident and feminine as well. She was hooked, and opened Express MiE to share that same feeling with other women.

Today, Christie and her staff start each of Express MiE?s sultry fitness classes with a guided meditation. That?s because the studio prioritizes finding and trusting inner beauty over learning snazzy pole tricks. And while the moves are certainly sensual, they?re inspired less by the promiscuity of romance novels or flirtatious barbershop poles than by techniques from ballet, ballroom, and belly dancing. This winning combination led the Phoenix New Times to name the studio Best Place to Learn to Pole Dance in 2010, noting that the instructors ?are serious about developing core strength and six-pack abs by wrapping and gyrating around poles and cheering each other on.?
