At Shapes Total Fitness for Women, the instructors strive to make working out as easy and fun as possible. That's why?in addition to providing access to free weights and cardio machines?they host more than 67 group training sessions per week, with options ranging from yoga to indoor cycling. That way, clients can get in shape using whatever means work best for them. Some of the eclectic classes have zero impact on joints, too?specifically the ones in the on-site pool. These include 45-minute water cardio classes and versatile aqua aerobics sessions, which are ideal for athletes with arthritis and other special needs. The most completely flexible workouts at the gym, however, are the personal training sessions. The one-on-one workouts are designed purely around the client's goals, whether she wants to lose weight or grow strong enough to carry her favorite dumbbell home with her.
CrossFit 428's dedicated trainers, Ricky, Hope and Jethrie, strive to help clients of all shapes and sizes—from stay-at-home moms to competitive athletes—achieve their personal fitness goals through dynamic workouts. Unlike other weight-lifting or cardio exercises, the CrossFit method builds strength using functional movements people perform on a daily basis, such as squatting, reaching, and running away from the guy who's running away from the cops. During the one-hour workouts, participants work to perfect 10 areas of physical skill, which include cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, power, and agility. The staff also provides nutritional guidance to augment the process of becoming fitter.
Roy Taylor wasn’t always an NASM-, NASCA-, AFAA-, and ACE-certified personal trainer. He was once a 6’5” kid who weighed 145 pounds. He combated his lankiness by working out, ultimately gaining 95 pounds of muscle. At Body Construction, which he founded in 1986, his current and former bodies both shape his personal training technique. Welcoming of all fitness levels, Roy and his trainers work with everyone from kids to members of the FBI. He leads intense, daily CrossFit classes as well as stocks his gym with machines and uses equipment such as tires, sledgehammers, and monkey bars during workouts.
Wendy O’ Lenic, of Wendy Fit, began her professional dance career in 1979 with a Vegas dance review. Over the years, her passion for movement evolved and found a new life in yoga. Her curriculum covers various disciplines including yoga, Pilates, and meditation. Within the earth-green walls of her studio, Wendy and her staff lead students through group classes, private and semiprivate personal training sessions, and specialty courses such as ballet core and kettlebell. Once annually, the studio co-sponsors a yoga cruise so that students can practice their moves in fresh air and catch views of dolphins doing planks.
The instructors at Evolation Yoga help their students achieve greater health and centeredness with a unique blend of hot yoga and meditation. Rather than subscribing entirely to the tenets of Bikram yoga, they incorporate other yogic styles for a more fluid approach that’s accessible to all students. To achieve the best results, they lead classes in studios heated to keep the mug of tea balanced on each student’s head piping hot. They also organize regular workshops and events at each of the studio's eight locations throughout the United States, Costa Rica, Colombia, and Australia.
The certified personal trainers at Starka Fitness guide exercisers through fun full-body workouts that cultivate strength, balance, and muscle tone. TRX suspension training employs sturdy straps to turn the human body into its own weight machine. Instructors draw from more than 300 bodyweight exercises to help build strong, flexible muscles in the arms, abs, and back. One-hour boot-camp sessions burn calories by pairing indoor and outdoor strength-training drills with cardio exercises, enabling campers to swim through quicksand with confidence. All campers meet with a trainer before the first class, where they set goals to accomplish through jumping rope, tossing medicine balls, and lifting kettlebells. During Pilates sessions, up to 20 students fortify torso muscles and sculpt lean, flexible limbs with stretches and precisely controlled movements.
