What started as a beauty shop operating out of Aisha Khalid's home has now, 20 years later, blossomed into 10 full-service, women-only salons. The aestheticians at Aisha's Salon & Spa were some of the first to bring threading to the faces of Houston ladies, whisking away unruly brows, chin fuzz, and emperor-tamarin mustaches with a thin cotton filament. For body depilation, they turn to traditional waxing, and body polishes and facials leave skin rejuvenated and smooth. Stylists trim, straighten, and color tresses, and makeup artists apply finishing touches with traditional or airbrush products.

The skincare specialists at each independently owned and operated Facelogic Spa follow the same mantra: to bring out the best in each client. To do this, the technicians work through a brief questionnaire and skin analysis to determine which of the menu?s 10-plus facials best suit each client's skin. Signature facials rely on Facelogic?s own Signature skincare line, which uses botanical-based formulas and advanced cosmetic and pharmaceutical combinations to cleanse, exfoliate, and moisturize. The Elite facial covers skin with products from brands such as Glo Therapeutics and ?minence organic products. All facials include an arm-and-shoulder massage, and can be enhanced with a range of add-ons, including chemical peels and sonnets composed by the aesthetician.

Warren Wilkes Salon is quite capable of cranking out pretty hairdos with dazzling highlights, but its owner is also able to deal with the wind- and sun-ravaged hair that only comes from frequently riding a motorcycle. According to an Examiner.com article, Warren, a biker himself, knows exactly where to add layers so that the hair still maintains a great shape even after being smooshed under a helmet and tied with hair bands. He even tells his long-haired clients to place covered hair bands in tresses every 3 inches in order to keep hair protected from the elements and frog plagues. When Warren and his stylists are not tending to bikers’ hair, they correct color, add hair extensions, and create updos. Aestheticians work alongside Warren and his hairstylists, beautifying faces with microdermabrasion and lash tinting.

Signature Service: Deep-tissue and Swedish massage Brands Used: Dr. Singha's Mustard Rub Established: 2011 Reservations/Appointments: Required Handicap Accessible: Yes Staff Size: 2?10 people Parking: Parking lot Q&A with Sophia Whorton, Licensed Massage Therapist Besides making clients happy, what do you like most about your job? I love the joy of giving customized rejuvenation time. Every client has the opportunity for introspection and is in charge of their own therapy, so I can better facilitate their pathway to more functional muscle health. Each person is unique and offers me new insights about bodywork in my practice. I'm really blessed to have such a fulfilling career where I can explore new techniques and have fun doing what I love. How did you get started in the beauty industry? Did you have an "ah-ha" moment in life? Around 2006 I was completely directionless about what i wanted to do with my life. All of my friends, family, and acquaintances were in agreement that I was calm and centered, and into holistic information and application, so they suggested massage as the perfect career for me. I was rather taken aback. [At the time], I had only received one or two [massages], which was quite a luxury for me. I hadn't thought of massage as a "health" avenue, but as a option for the elite. I took a risk and signed up for massage school when college didn't pan out for me. I couldn't be more happy with the choice I made. I am still learning so much. The new modalities and practical applications never end, which is what keeps me enthusiastic about my massage and bodywork practice. Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover? I am absolutely passionate about the organic lifestyle. I live and breathe it to the point of obnoxiousness to some. However, it is a subject that deserves more public education than I alone can give it. The world must soon see the importance of a toxic-free environment for all. I believe with all my heart we as people don't vote at the polls, but with our dollars. This is why I will only use the highest quality organic massage oils, essential oil blends, and even organic cotton sheets in my practice. I also hand make organic exfoliating and deep cleansing salt scrubs. We all deserve the best and purest from nature, and to ensure we keep getting it, I, for one, will continue to buy organic no matter the cost. The more who join in, the less toxic our planet will end up for future generations.

Amid high-vaulted ceilings, Hair Play Salon & Spa displays a newly remodeled interior, complete with modern artwork hanging from the walls. But even though the space has a fresh, new look, the salon's technicians still rely on classic beauty techniques to execute quality hair, skin, and nail services seven days a week. On the salon floor, stylists nourish locks with deep-conditioning Moroccanoil masks and add immediate length with hair extensions. During mani-pedis, nail technicians sheathe digits in acrylic tips or colorful Shellac polishes. Meanwhile, back in the spa area, aestheticians polish pores with a variety of facials, including treatments that eliminate acne and signs of aging. The family-friendly shop also accommodates children younger than 12 with haircuts, cleaning up shaggy tendrils and shearing off french braids made from gum. Little ladies can further experience pampering with a princess package, which dolls up girls with a variety of mini nail, hair, and skin services.
