Navy Special Operators are recognized as some of the world's most feared warriors. Run using the same aquatic training program that tests the mettle of real-life divers and explosives techs, Hellbender's Amphibious Bootcamp sends exercisers plunging in and out of the water as they blast through a blend of calisthenics and aquatic exercises. A diverse collection of former sailors, soldiers, and firefighters lead the classes, shouting encouragement as as students switch from pushups and pull-ups to freestyle, breaststroke, and sprint swims. Movable obstacles including sandbags, weights, and decommissioned bathyspheres also wait beneath the depths, challenging endurance as they bulk up screaming muscles. Classes welcome all fitness levels, but exercisers should be able to tread water, swim at least 25 yards without stopping, and arrive with their own goggles and swimsuit.
Talia Jimenez knows what it takes to get in shape. After the birth of her daughter, Talia was determined to shed the excess weight from her pregnancy and leave her diet of fast food behind. She not only found success with exercise and healthy eating—she learned how to help others find it, too. At L.E Workout, Jimenez and fellow coach Erick Ramiro lead group classes that blend weight training and cardio to blast calories and build lean muscle. They also run weight loss challenges and offer up nutritional supplements that complement workouts.
At CrossFit MOB, mind prevails over body as trainers lead groups through a new Workout of the Day (WOD) every day. In their gym, which CrossFitters refer to as a “box,” groups perform a variety of exercises at high intensity for short intervals. Workouts can be scaled for all fitness levels, and often include exercises such as running, rowing, weight lifting, kettlebell moves, as well as rope climbing and gymnastics-inspired exercises.

SkateStart owner Patrick O'Toole started his skating career as many people do: by falling down constantly while skating a faulty board. He wanted to spend time with his skateboarding cousins, so his father bought him a generic, unresponsive deck from a big-box store. It barely rolled and always cancelled their playtime last minute to watch soap operas. His junky equipment and lack of knowledge kept him from keeping up with his peers. It wasn't until his father surprised him with a safe, professional skate set that his cousins finally slowed down and began teaching him the ins and outs of thrashing cement waves.
Now in his 20s, Patrick makes it his professional mission to teach the next generation of skaters the proper techniques they need to enjoy the sport. He and his team of certified instructors use his patent-pending skateboard system that shows beginners where to place their feet to push off, perform an ollie, and avoid tripping a board's self-destruct countdown. In addition to imparting fundamental skills, their lessons also build up the confidence necessary to tackle more complex maneuvers.
