In 1976, Joan Barnes—a Californian mom frustrated with the lack of spaces where she could take her kids for safe and age-appropriate play time—took matters into her own hands and founded Gymboree Play & Music. In the decades since Gymboree’s founding, Joan’s vision of a safe place where youngsters could build confidence and creativity has come to fruition and spread to 30 countries around the globe. Staffed by attentive and expertly trained instructors, each Gymboree outpost adheres to a curriculum of activities designed by experts to foster the development of children’s’ cognitive, physical, and social skills through structured play and close readings of Goodnight Moon. The staffers also conduct entertaining classes that cover subjects ranging from music to sports, imparting valuable lessons of imagination and physical activity to developing minds. To further set apart her business, Barnes employed nationally renowned playground designer Jay Beck to design the proprietary play equipment at her centers.
Thanks to Los Angeles School of Gymnastics, more than one million families have found themselves more flexible, more physically fit, and healthier since 1975. In the decades since opening their doors, the school has developed more and more programs to cater to diverse community members. Even their trampolines and padded floors welcome everyone from toddlers to adults and beginners to professional-level competitors capable of cartwheeling for miles.
As for the teaching staff, the school's coaches come from across the world (14 different countries in total), and each has completed multiple certification courses, including those from the Occupational Safety and Health Administration. That experience guides them in each one of their gymnastics programs, whether it's a class for parents and their toddlers, an adult parkour class, or a gymnastics camp for kids with special needs.
Trapeze School New York’s expansion west meant Angelenos no longer had to cross the country to join the circus. At their outdoor studio on the Santa Monica Pier, highly trained instructors teach beginner, intermediate, and advanced maneuvers during classes on the flying trapeze, aerial silks, lyra, trampoline, and Spanish web. All of Trapeze School New York’s countrywide facilities in New York, Boston, Washington, DC, Chicago, and LA hold themselves to high safety standards that account for everything from equipment to instructors and safety belts. In an effort to bring their flying-trapeze instruction to surrounding communities regardless of funding, the school also gives lessons through their nonprofit branch of operations.
Amir Solsky found his love of movement though yoga—a discovery that eventually led to him to capoeira. He began teaching the Brazilian art, and studied the fundamentals of movement at the Wingate Institution in Israel—an Olympic training site. Solsky went on to display his skill in music videos, television shows, and a commercial for Journeys shoe stores, and now he shares his knowledge and experience at his own studio, Capoeira Los Angeles.
Capoeira developed in Brazil as a unique blend of dance moves and martial arts. Two fighters create dialogue through graceful attacks and adept dodges, while spectators provide rhythms for their movements by singing and playing music. During each class, Amir breaks down each technique so that participants of all ages and skill levels can join in. And when he isn't teaching, he performs circus arts such as aerial hand-to-hand balancing, contortion, and sculpting with circus peanuts.
There’s a class level for every child, from the youngest beginner up to the Olympic hopeful, at Broadway Gymnastics School. That means individualized and segmented attention for kids of different age groups and skill levels. The nearly-30,000 square foot facility offers classes for kids starting at just 18 months – the adorably-named “Tumbling Toddlers” – and go all the way through adult classes, for the biggest of kids. The School also has its own U.S.A. Gymnastics teams, which participate in meets held everywhere from Pasadena to Jackson, Miss. and beyond. The facility routinely hosts birthday parties as well, the perfect alternative for parents looking to escape the usual slumber parties and expensive amusement park shindigs. With more than 30 years of experience, Broadway Gymnastics School is the home for all things tumbling.
