Paintings of bowls overflowing with fruit, majestic Southwestern mesas, and a white horse against an orange backdrop line the brick walls at Mitchell School of Fine Arts. Beneath those examples, students of all ages and levels learn to create their own magnum opuses under the tutelage of instructors, who channel degrees in fine art, publication in books and magazines, and a range of other credentials.
In classes, the teachers focus on topics such as landscape painting or classical drawing to help pupils master the nuances of a particular style and portray the beauty of a blossoming flower or a dirt bike that runs on flowers. An animal pastels class for youngsters inspires participants to grab soft drawing implements and sketch colorful fauna on paper. Private lessons are available, as are commissioned portraits from the faculty themselves, who will render the likeness of a loved one.
SIGNING Basics' instructors help their students learn to speak without uttering a word. Through private lessons and group classes, they teach American Sign Language to students of all ages and backgrounds. Introductory lessons lead students through the basics of the sign-language alphabet and movements. Advanced classes show students how to carry conversations, enabling them to communicate effectively or correct baseball coaches' faulty ?charge the mound? gestures. Instructors also offer workshops that impart basic techniques for businesses and groups.
The seasoned photographer at E.Y.E. Imagery Studios doesn't shoot weddings, events, or anything on-location. However, this doesn't mean that she isn't versatile; the modern studio simply provides all the space she needs. In a shooting area brimming with eclectic furniture, backgrounds, and colorful props, the photographer poses clients ranging from newborns and children to families and engaged couples. She also directs more specialized sessions, including boudoir and pin-up shoots, with added touches such as titillating costumes. Whatever the session, each client will receive links to high-resolution downloads, each painstakingly retouched by the photographer.
Before hitting the salon floor, students at American Beauty Academy first complete a regimen of classroom coursework and hands-on training on models and Barbie dolls caught in the wild. It's only then, under the watchful eye of instructor supervisors, that they're set free to show off their newly acquired hair, skin, and nail care skills to clients. Available services include not only women's hairstyling, but also color, chemical treatments, and men's barbering.
The staff members at Sylvan Learning's numerous centers understand that each child learns differently. Therefore, they don’t try to implement a uniform tutoring system; instead, they design custom lesson programs based on the results of a skills assessment using diagnostic tools and one-on-one interviews.
Tutors work with students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12, illuminating topics ranging from basic reading and writing to remembering complex algebraic formulas without having them tattooed on your chest. Many of Sylvan’s instructors work in local schools, so they are intimately familiar with common curricula and understand how to gear lessons toward optimal results. Camps and after-school and summer classes can ready high-schoolers for the rigors of the ACT or the SAT, or they can help students to wow college-admissions officers with their superior essay-writing skills.
