One of the oldest paths to discipline and self-development, Martial Arts have been practiced for thousands of years, not just to be able to defend oneself, but to nurture the best aspects of one's innermost nature. At Brown Institute of Martial Arts, Guru Jeff Brown and his team of instructors relay this importance to each of their pupils, whether it's intense muay-thai kickboxing or introductory classes designed specifically for kids. With classes designed for all levels, the schedule aims to accommodate students of all ages and experience levels.
Since 1976, the instructors of TAMA Martial Arts Center have taught eight distinct disciplines—kung fu, muay thai kickboxing, and Brazilian jujitsu, to name a few. Some students work to master one discipline and others cross-train, learning a range of self-defense techniques. The classes are geared to specific age groups; kids aged 7–12 build self-esteem and motor skills in children's classes, and adults can enroll in more intensive courses and workshops on topics such as knife-defense techniques.
Students as young as 4 embark on a journey at TNT Midwest Martial Arts Inc. that fosters self-discipline, respect, and an innate sense to karate chop their way through every door. Classes teach high kicks, swift punches, and other self-defense skills.
At Davis School of Martial Arts, Master Charles Platt and Master Jeri Carson and a team of certified instructors share decades upon decades of wisdom while teaching students four traditional forms of martial arts. One of these forms is traditional karate, wherein circular blocks are used to deflect and control attacks. Another, okinawan kobudo, uses weapons. Aikido, based on a philosophy of harmony and nonviolence, promotes flexibility and inner strength over raw physical force. And where aikido favors defense, aiki-jutsu's similar techniques tend toward offense. No matter the art, though, the staff layer their lessons atop the school’s unchanging pillars of manners, peace, drive, courage, and self-improvement.
