A wildly successful alternative to traditional day spas—its more than 300 locations blanket 36 states and half a dozen countries—Planet Beach is a futuristic relaxation station where state-of-the-art machines administer all the spa and tanning services. These friendly automatons sometimes replace familiar treatments, as in the Luminous facial, a light-based service that delivers blemish-busting results similar to those of a conventional facial. But other equipment maps out new spa territory entirely: the Hydro-Derma Fusion chamber moisturizes the whole body with nutrient-rich steam in order to offset the effects of a dry climate or a rear-end collision with a salt truck. Other machines whiten teeth, spray-tan skin, and massage muscles.

Planet Beach operates on a gym-style membership system, meaning that members purchase packages or pay flat monthly rates. As members spend more time at the spa, they get to know the helpful assistants who are always on hand to demonstrate how to use the equipment without activating its ability to cry.

Body Image Optimization's aestheticians pamper fading physiques with a bevy of technologically advanced beautifying procedures. During two 20-minute VelaShape treatments, slimming bodies can choose to contour the buttocks, portions of the thighs, abdominals, love handles, the back bra line, centaurian hooves, arms, or calves ($250/session). Tightening technicians vacuum and massage skin as they employ an amalgamation of bipolar radiofrequency and infrared light energy. The silkening savants suggest six shaping sessions to gradually smooth skin and reduce cellulite, until patrons are as smooth and alluring as a dolphin at a masked ball.

Changes Salon's talented staff combines trained stylists and cosmetologists, overseen by an American Board of Certified Haircolorists master colorist, to offer an array of salon services. Silent movie skulls can get follicularly technicolored with top highlights ($65+) while twisty locks can get straightened out with an anti-curling treatment ($75+). Haircuts range from $40–$55 for women, $25–$35 for men, $17–$27 for children (depending on age), and are free for any ghost-based ancestors. Mugs can opt for the signature facial, which includes extractions and is accompanied by a massage of the face, neck, and shoulders, as well as heated hand mitts to melt away ice from freezer-stored appendages. The approximately 60-minute salt-glow body exfoliation coats dearly departed skin with a custom, heated blend of Dead Sea salts, aromatherapy plant extracts, seaweed, and nourishing oils, before soothingly removing the concoction with warm, steamed towels to reveal moisturized and marinated skin. This dermis-dazzling and lock-illuminating deal is for new clients only.

Like any good teacher, style director and salon owner Shelley Hutchinson believes you are never done learning. Her 14 years as a cosmetologist have led her to oversee a staff of hairstylists, aestheticians, and massage therapists, all of whom continue to hone their skills through educational seminars. As they absorb new techniques, they graduate on a track from apprentice to senior stylist, having chosen a major in either scissor biology or beehive keeping. Shelley herself attends international trade shows to keep up with the world's aesthetic tastes, adapting her knowledge of cuts and colors to make the most of the salon's partnership with Goldwell.

Inside Shelley's beautification venue, sunlight illuminates fixtures inspired by the natural world. Potted trees, floral arrangements, and bamboo window shades complement the earth-toned walls of private spa and public styling areas. The services also draw from nature: guests can warm their feet during the Tranquil Earth pedicure featuring hot rocks, or they can nourish their features with an enzyme peel's pineapple and papaya extracts.

Pure Serenity tailors its upscale beautifying services to the individual follicles, countenances, and skeleton outfits of each patron. Hair treatments reboot stalled head nests with the classic shampoo, cut, and style ($35 for women, $18 for men, $10+ for kids), and perms ($40+) and foils ($35+) add texture and color to strands that may otherwise be mistaken for a ream of office paper. Nail services include phalange-pampering manicures ($20+) and pedicures ($35+), and clients may augment their calcium-rich keratin tips with a full set of artificial nails ($40). Indulgent facials rejuvenate crumbling façades ($30 for 30 minutes, $50 for 60 minutes), and bikini ($25), full-leg ($45), and chin ($10) waxing keeps corporeal surfaces smoother than an ice rink tended to by a zamboni-driving Fabio.
