While Kays Photography owner Katelyn Dorrington always had a knack for the creative, she never dreamed she would one day grow up to become a professional photographer. In fact, her lifelong dream was to become a singer, until the birth of her son forever altered her artistic path. Moved by this momentous occasion, a passion for helping others immortalize the important moments in their lives was born within her, and she spent the next three years of her life studying and perfecting her craft and drawing a talented team to work beside her in her Lower Sackville studio.

Not surprisingly, newborn photography is one of Katelyn's specialties and she combines her artistic eye and motherly instincts to capture everything from a precious close-up of a perfect petite foot to a candid commemorative shot of baby's 200th nap. She also specializes in wedding packages, which include three to nine hours of event coverage, permanently documented in a high-resolution DVD of images, as well as engagement and maternity shoots, which may take place on-location, or inside her studio, which is equipped with countless props and backdrops.

The media pros at Hourglass Media transform old recordings and photographs into high-quality digital files with their advanced, onsite equipment. During film transfers, a technician converts 8-milimetre and Super 8 film to uncompressed files on DVD, ensuring picture fidelity with 700 lines of resolution. Analog media such as audio cassettes, VHS tapes, and vinyl LPs metamorphose into any digital file format, allowing patrons to load old songs onto iPods, share home movies over the internet, and replace every sound on the family computer with an old recording of grandpa snoring. Slide and photo transfers pull the same trick with old pictures and custom video editing further polishes heirloom moving pictures or important present-day footage.

Wyse Photography's shot-snappers attribute their success in capturing memorable family and pet portraits to an abundance of patience and a willingness to embarrass themselves. Goofy sounds and wacky contortions are a few of the key weapons in their arsenal for commanding the attention of infants, toddlers, cats, and dogs. No sitting fee is assessed for studio sessions, and print orders are cheaper by the sheet when ordered in bulk. In addition to specialty portrait services, the image-capturing experts occasionally offer basic photography classes at the studio, on the Internet, or in the Phantom Zone.

Two forces have constantly battled for Laura MacPhee’s affection: her career as photographer and her hometown of Halifax. After studying photography in the city, Laura skipped graduation to hop on a plane to New York City, where she began sharpening her skills as an intern at the Knot. Homesick for Nova Scotia after a year and a half, she returned to Halifax and synergized those competing forces by founding Laura MacPhee Photography.

Amid the region’s breathtaking terrain, Laura flashes her camera at expectant moms, families, and engaged couples. Portrait sessions also occur in her studio on the Halifax waterfront, where she also orchestrates intimate boudoir sessions. For weddings, she and a trusted second photographer shoot up to eight hours of coverage, which newlyweds can preserve with prints, hardcover books, or new wedding veils made out of negative film strips. Despite being stationed in Halifax, Laura happily travels for destination weddings; thus far, her passport has been stamped for work in Cuba and the Dominican Republic.
