In 1976, Joan Barnes—a Californian mom frustrated with the lack of spaces where she could take her kids for safe and age-appropriate play time—took matters into her own hands and founded Gymboree Play and Music. In the decades since Gymboree’s founding, Joan’s vision of a safe place where youngsters could build confidence and creativity has come to fruition and spread to 30 countries around the globe. Staffed by attentive and expertly trained instructors, each Gymboree outpost adheres to a curriculum of activities designed by experts to foster the development of children’s’ cognitive, physical, and social skills through structured play and close readings of Goodnight Moon. The staffers also conduct entertaining classes that cover subjects ranging from music to sports, imparting valuable lessons of imagination and physical activity to developing minds. To further set apart her business, Barnes employed nationally renowned playground designer Jay Beck to design the proprietary play equipment at her centers.
Between the red and white walls, and under the high ceiling of CrossFit Boones Ferry’s gym, certified trainers Trevor and Derek lead groups through the functional movements and exercises of the CrossFit system. Through the use of everyday motions such as lifting, pushing, and pulling, they prep patrons to safely engage all manner of enterprises, from sports and work-related activities to daily routines such as carrying groceries. By changing the workout each day, they also target each muscle group for full-body fitness, using a wide variety of equipment, including kettlebells, plyometric boxes, and pull-up bars. For those in need of more individualized attention, they also offer personal, one-on-one training.
At Summerfield Golf Course, players search for birdies and eagles among the tree-lined fairways of a nine-hole, par-33 course. With three par 3s and six par 4s, the course measures 2,343 yards from the farthest tees, letting clubbers focus on their short game and give their titanium drivers most of the day off to spend soaking in a bathtub full of polish. Each hole holds two tee options to suit different skill levels and allow golfers who want to loop it twice for an 18-hole round to experience a distinct front and back nine. Summerfield's onsite pro shop, meanwhile, prepares players for their rounds with shirts, balls, apparel, and tees.
King City Golf Course strings together three par 3s, five par 4s, and a single par 5 for a relatively short and challenging 2,284-yard course that has been welcoming swings since 1966. A gauntlet of sand traps and a pond form the bulk of difficulties along the layout's relatively flat track, a welcome relief from sadistic designs with extreme elevation changes or vertical greens. Golfers can warm up their swinging sinews at the course’s practice net before starting their round.
