The Richmond Spiders hail out of the Atlantic 10 Conference as an NCAA Division I Men's Basketball team. After finishing ranked 24th in the nation last year, the enigmatic Spiders are primed for another successful season with 14 of 16 players returning. Backed by top cop scorers Kevin Anderson and Justin Harper, this year's squad of hard-court ballers will head into the Robins Center under the textbook guidance of coach Chris Mooney's. The ticket is valid for the best available seat in the premium section, which is located along the lower-level center and side court.
The Barksdale Theatre puts on professional productions with the intimate and historic Hanover Tavern. Dan Goggin’s Nunsense details the fundraising efforts of the little sisters of Hoboken, who need cash to bury fallen sisters poisoned by the convent cook. This screwball comedy has been outfitted with new jokes, new lyrics, a brand-new song, and a snazzy new bouffant hairdo for the Hanover Tavern stage. Check the schedule for show times. As musical theater is a dish best served alongside edible dishes, reservations for brunch and dinner in the Tavern’s old dining rooms are available separately and offered prior to performances.
Founded in 1993, the Richmond Kickers have reached the postseason 16 out of 18 years, have won four championships, and made an appearance in the title game in 2010. Catch this year’s hard-tackling roster of fleet-footed footballers as they stomp on Orlando City during their season opener, or make it out to one of the ensuing regular-season games against the formidable Pittsburgh Riverhounds, the rowdy Rochester Rhinos, or the fully juiced Charleston Battery. This deal gives you the chance to watch reflex-gifted goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale and the bold strikes of half-man, half-cheetah forward Matthew Delicâte as they lace up their boots to go head to head with opponents in USL Pro’s inaugural season.
One of the Science Museum of Virginia’s current exhibits includes a few basketball players—just don’t expect LeBron James or Kobe Bryant. These basketball players are two rats, playing a live one-on-one game to demonstrate operant and classical conditioning. Throughout the three-story museum, more hands-on examples of science await at five permanent exhibits. Inspect a rock from the moon, explore a life-size space capsule, and generate energy by pedaling a stationary bike. Kids can even build their own playground with materials such as mats and foam blocks.
Inside the IMAX Dome, a screen 10 times the size of a typical 35 mm screen shows a wide range of educational films. Outside the museum, plants in the BayScapes Garden thrive without pesticide, fertilizer, or the encouragement of a motivational speaker, and an onsite greenhouse offers free planting areas for visitors to contribute greenery and learn about sustainable farming.
