At Action Bartending School, instructors with more than five years of behind-the-bar experience train pupils in bartending fundamentals. During private workshops or classes that are capped at six, students practice their cocktail-making skills at their own station in an actual bar environment. They’ll learn what glasses to use for cocktails, how to make garnishes, and ways to signal their piano players to switch over to the minor key when a bad guy enters. Within one week, students graduate with their certification, at which point Action Bartending School assists them in finding a full-time bartending job.
Eye Level Learning Center’s name draws its inspiration from the story of a teacher with a unique perspective. On a trip to the Smithsonian, a man would kneel down in front of each painting, attracting the attention of other visitors. Finally, when asked what he was doing, he replied, “I am an elementary-school teacher, and I will bring my students here tomorrow. I was wondering how my students would enjoy the paintings from a student’s eye level.” In that spirit, the tutors at this multidisciplinary learning center put the reins in their students' hands with their child-directed learning process, which ensures kids develop the skills they need at a pace they can handle, without getting bored enough to eat their homework and blame it on their dogs.

Marcia Langford Perez's brother Gene once owned a small farm in north Florida. Here, each season, he would plant a few vines of rare grapes. When it came time to harvest, he chose his brother Philip as the vintner. This family affair quickly pulled in Marcia and her husband Gerald, who joined in tending the vineyards and making wine. After Gene passed away, Marcia decided to honor his legacy: she opened Wine Workshop and Brew Center, a polished craft store and urban winery dedicated to the art of independent brewing and winemaking.
Today, Marcia and her staff explore the ins and outs of winemaking during in-store classes and slumber parties in the fermentation tanks. They help visitors choose their grape or juice, blend the yeast, and?after a few weeks?collect, bottle, and label the finished wine. They also teach beer brewing in a series of weekly workshops, highlighting the partial-boil process and the uses of hops, yeast, and specialty malts. For those who want to try brewing on their own, the store also supplies ingredients and equipment such as fermentation containers, extract kits, base and specialty grains, and full wine kits from popular producers.
