Spend a month at Power & Physique Systems to whittle away excess body bark using state-of-the-art cardio machines and a schedule of diverse group-fitness classes, including cardio boxing, Zumba, and dynamactivity, a weight-loss workout that combines kettlebells and band work with lots of waist-melting torso exercises. Stomachs seeking one-on-one attention can book a personal trainer to help sculpt flabby growlers into chiseled six-packs over the course of two sessions ($120). Meanwhile, skilled therapists can rid newly shaped shapes of tension during a 60-minute Swedish massage ($55), reducing neck pain caused by flirty hair swinging and science-class daydreams.
At the beginning of his fitness career, Conor Kelly was a walking paradox: an out-of-shape personal trainer. Though he had taken part in powerlifting and strongman competitions, he found that much of the weight he had gained over the years was fat rather than muscle. So, he became his own client. He observed how lean, toned people conducted their workouts, paying special attention to practices that weren't mentioned in mainstream gym classes. He spoke with other trainers to learn which strategies produced results, and which were ineffective fads. Eventually, he combined all of his research into a new philosophy—one that banished his excess weight, and became the founding principle of Evolution Fitness.
The method he created relies on personalization. Clients meet with him or another certified personal trainer for an initial assessment, during which they identify their goals and take several measurements. The trainers then plan workouts to address specific aims, whether it's weight loss or muscle sculpting. They coach their clients in a private studio with a mix of cardio intervals and strength exercises, keeping the routines varied and, to the best of their ability, fun. Nutritionist Dr. Abazar Habibinia also contributes dietary advice. His manageable tips work within the client's lifestyle, and refrain from stressful rules that prohibit your favourite foods unless you're eating them while doing a wall-sit. And, for those that can't commit to an ongoing, customized program, Conor and his team also host group boot-camp sessions.
At CrossFit Fixx, Anne Manka and her coaching crew make adults, children, and even senior citizens perform the same exercises. This may sound counterintuitive, but every movement performed in a given Workout of the Day (WOD) is scalable to the capabilities of the performer. In other words, every participant is doing the same exercise, just adjusted for duration or load in accordance with how much the exerciser can realistically take on. This is what makes the sport accessible to all ages and fitness levels, including the elderly, still-developing youngsters, and adults who only run when they are double-parked. Ultimately, the coaches ask only that their students push themselves and each other through the varied exercises in order to reap long-term benefits such as increased strength, flexibility, and endurance.
Rob Cantalicio has dedicated more than a decade to helping individuals work toward their health and fitness goals. At Zona Athletics, he continues this mission by leading workouts that use a variety of high-intensity exercises and functional movements to provide strength and cardio training. Throughout the course of a workout, attendees may heft medicine balls, bench-press weights, swing kettlebells, climb ropes, and perform lunges across a swath of astroturf. This variety helps keep students engaged by breaking up the monotonous routine of going to the gym, jogging on a treadmill, and dead lifting the treadmill and strapping it to your back to take home.
Koko FitClub Oro Valley exercise programs were designed by fitness pros Rob Parr, Kathy Kaehler, and Michael Wood, who together boast a portfolio of high-profile clients including Madonna, Hugh Jackman, and numerous professional athletes. The trio's digitally empowered program pushes personalization at all levels, from tailored routines to individualized results and goals. To accommodate trainees, each gym houses hybrid exercise machines built for both cardio and strength training, eliminating the need to either change machines or bench-press friends in between reps. To begin, guests insert Koko keys into machines, which then display personalized routines broken down in a comprehensive manner. Throughout the workout, the system monitors technique, pace, and overall progress, which clients can later review on a private web page.
