Dr. Karen Harris's path toward naturopathy began when an illness led her to seek out and study natural alternatives to wellness. Her findings not only led her toward improved health but also uncovered a passion for holistic solutions that set her on the path toward her future career. Today, this doctor of naturopathy and nutritional counselor serves as the head of Saba' Health Center, where she operates under the philosophy that the body can heal itself if given the right ingredients, which may include exercise, a healthy diet, and the expulsion of toxins. To help hasten the healing process, she aids bodies with services that range from colon hydrotherapy to detox formula supplements to body scans for conditions such as gluten sensitivity and celiac disease, and provides access to products including liquid multivitamins and antioxidant juices.
At New Horizons Reflexology, a certified reflexologist applies pressure to specific points on the feet that correspond to various areas of the anatomy, such as the lower back, thyroid, or semicolon. This is referred to as reflexology, a holistic healing technique designed to relax, balance, and energize the body.

"I gained 60 pounds when I had my son," Ashley, Parakletos Wellness's co-owner, says—but there's triumph in her voice. She credits body wraps for helping to shed those pounds, and now performs these services for others. Ashley, a licensed massage therapist and aesthetician, and her husband and personal trainer Stephen operate Parakletos, whose name translates fittingly to “called to help.”
The couple is happy in the facility, with its sand-hued walls and pulsing ocean soundtrack. Having only a single treatment room allows them to help clients one at a time. "If someone comes in with acne or rosacea, we don't want you to have to interact. We want you to be able to leave insecurities at door." In addition to an oxygen cucumber facial, Parakletos can slacken shoulders with river stones during private massage sessions, but, due to her personal experiences, it's weight-loss wraps that Ashley holds in the highest regard.
"Folks come in and we ask a lot of questions. How much water do you drink? How much do you workout? It's not about vanity for us, it's about the lifestyle change." The body wraps, which are designed to help motivate and shed weight, are composed of 12 different herbal ingredients. All of the products and supplements employed by Parakletos are forged from herbs and flora, much like Robinson Crusoe's Gameboy. Even when she is far from the studio's brimming shelves, Ashley says that she tries to let her passion for what she does thrive. "I give one pro-bono massage a week. If I'm at church and someone mentions a pulled hamstring, I'll pass them a note. I like to be a blessing for anyone I can."
The power of pleasant scents is timeless. Learn about aromatherapy's history with Groupon's introduction.
Aromatherapy sessions take place on a spectrum that stretches from relaxing to extremely relaxing. Practitioners extract the all-important essential oils and aromatic compounds from flowers, bark, roots, resins, and other natural sources. During the actual session, clients simply relax and take deep breaths, triggering olfactory signals connected to the brain and traveling into the lungs where the particles can quickly enter the bloodstream. At many spas and massage studios, therapists dilute these essential oils and apply them directly to the skin with massage lotions or in warm baths.
Though there is a lack of clinical evidence supporting the medical benefits of these plant-derived oils, their therapeutic application can be traced back as far as the era of the Old Testament. Sealed urns of aromatic resins have been unearthed in the tombs of Egyptian pharaohs, and recorded uses of essential oils can be found in ancient cultures across the Middle East and in India and China. Scent sciences were brought into the modern era by French chemist Ren?-Maurice Gattefoss? in 1937, when he published a book detailing an explosion that resulted in severe burns all over his hands and the seemingly miraculous recovery he made after treating them with lavender oil.
What is one of your signature services? How is it performed?
Lavender sugar foot scrub. I start by wrapping your feet in warm towels and applying compression. Next, I exfoliate and freshen your feet with the lavender sugar scrub and wrap them in warm towels again. After removing the scrub, I lavish each foot with an incredible massage using reflexology techniques with a luxurious body butter.
