Using audience suggestions as a creative springboard, Made Up Theatre’s quartet of resident performers conjures chortles with fully improvised scenes, games, and musical numbers every Saturday night at 8 p.m. Classes grant guests of varying performance backgrounds an opportunity to sample the art of improv before climbing through three ranks of classes that emphasize quick responses and structuring longer-form scenes. Made Up Theatre also totes its trick bag to the corporate world with team-building seminars that draw upon improv’s communicative foundation to improve group interactions and send stress off to take up residence in rant-fueled standup comics.
At each of several one-day festivals held throughout the country, thousands of revelers unite in an epic clash of pulp, beer, and live music. Armed with a cache of 300,000 tomatoes, participants don protective bathing suits and goggles and hurl the fruit at one another during a two-hour battle. Throughout the afternoon, live music and costume contests offer an entertaining respite from the front lines, as bartenders dispense drafts of beer to attendees older than 21, refueling soldiers' morale before they resign to writing goodbye letters to their produce vendors back home. All tomatoes used during the event are past ripe and already fated for disposal, making the battle an efficient means of tossing them before their cursed transformation into singing Muppets.
At Menlo Hub, both food and art find a place on the menu. The modern restaurant's walls are blanketed in original contemporary paintings, and on some nights, the dining space reverberates with music from live bands and solo musicians. But even on nights with performances, the main attraction is always found in the kitchen. Here, chefs design casual American dishes sprinkled with elements of Mediterranean cooking.
The menus focus on simple steaks and seafood, complemented by organic produce sourced from nearby sustainable farms. The artfully plated dishes include California sea bass, New York steaks with gorgonzola demi-glace, and eggplant-wrapped lamb shanks. While most visitors sample the cuisine in the airy main dining space, private groups eat in a secluded room warmed by a corner fireplace.
At the lively bar, flat-screen TVs broadcast sporting events as bartenders mix fruit-infused martinis and pour a range of California wines, which are made from grapes that are just thankful that they never became California raisins.
Vivre accommodates each guest's exercise preferences and cardio curiosities with a range of fitness classes and high-quality cardio and strength-training equipment. Membership benefits give runners, Pilates buffs, and karate children full access to the gym’s class schedule of quadriceps-building kickboxing classes, aorta-pumping spin classes, and chi-harnessing yoga classes. Patrons looking to fly solo can commit flagrant arson on innocent fat cells with treadmills, stationary bikes, and elliptical machines—many of which are equipped with personal TV screens. Vivre’s intimate studio spaces make it easy for sweat donors to chat and socialize with one another, and its certified fitness trainers are more than happy to explain the difference between a dumbbell and a Liberty Bell to bewildered eighteenth-century time-warp victims. Chill out after a hard day’s muscle blasting with complimentary coffee and water before wicking off with a provided towel in Vivre’s clean and fully equipped locker room. Childcare services are also available to members for $7 per hour.
Though their guests aren't human, the staff at Good Dog Day Care still treat them like they are. They spend time learning each dog's individual quirks and personality traits to determine the best way to care for them. Under supervision, pups roam free, sniff, and socialize at an indoor play space padded with clean rubber floors. Vinyl fencing dampens upsetting noise, and it can also be used to separate dogs who are embroiled in a bitter chew-toy custody dispute. Additionally, an area of antimicrobial turf grass, designed especially for dogs, serves as the bathroom suite.
Canine guests can also get to know each other during training classes, which range from obedience training to puppy socials. Though socialization is encouraged, Good Dog Day Care realizes that sometimes dogs need time to themselves. This is why when dogs are kept overnight, they board their overnight guests in private sleeping spaces outfitted with custom flooring and dog beds. Staffers even follow the owner's feeding schedule to ensure that every dog maintains its routine.
Archery Only owner Wayne Piersol has garnered a slew of archery titles, starting with the California State Junior Olympic Championship, which he won at the age of 15. Other accolades include the Whitney-Hill award, which was named in honor of Mount Whitney and notable big-game hunter Howard Hill. Today, Piersol and his fellow experts teach archery to students of all ages at 12 indoor lanes. They focus on foundational skills such as proper form and range etiquette. Over time, students learn about different types of bows and shooting styles—from Olympics-style archery to outdoor bowhunting—until they uncover and master their favorite.
