Although it can't grant the power of flight or x-ray vision, açaí is still considered something of a super food. The fruit comes directly from the Brazilian rainforest and delivers loads of antioxidants, healthy omegas, and fiber to anyone who consumes it or sticks it into their ears. At Kitanda, açaí is just one of the many organic ingredients featured in a menu of healthy eats. The family-owned shop specializes in a wide range Brazilian snacks and drinks, including gluten-free breads and gourmet coffee brewed from 100-percent Brazilian beans.

Local artwork adorns the walls within Java Zombie, a Kirkland café with an ambience as cozy and comforting as a pantsuit sewn from deconstructed teddy bears. Baristas here brew Vivace espresso, steam milk for lattes, and top rich hot chocolate with dollops of whipped cream.

In the morning, patrons can sink teeth into breakfast sandwiches and burritos. Later in the day, the focus turns to gourmet sandwiches made with Boar's Head meats and artisanal breads from The Essential Baking Company. The menu also includes vegetarian and vegan options and gluten-free pastries from Stone Layne. Free WiFi signals drift through the air, and bands play live music during special events.

After 16 years of planning, tea master Jason Chen founded Smacha in 2012 to bring his favorite beverage to customers. Jason personally selects each tea found in his shop, from oolong to puer styles, in what amounts to more than 60 loose-leaf varieties, all of which meet or exceed EU and US MRL standards for chemical adulterants. Smacha's staff roasts the leaves on-site to bring out their flavors, and can show you how to make each tea properly right at their tasting bar. Each tea can be brewed into a hot cup and enjoyed with a pastry, or taken home with some of Smacha's signature teaware, which includes the easy-to-use Smacha Automatic Tea Brewer.

Q&A with the Owner

In your own words, how would you describe your menu?

Our menu has a large variety of food and drink items, but is not overwhelming.

What made you want to work with food? When did you first develop that passion?

We started our business to give our neighbors a better option for their morning coffee. Previously, the only options available were coffee from global corporations or from small sheds without plumbing that somehow pass health codes. We pride our self on having one of the cleanest, best equipped espresso businesses around.

The founders of Salud Whisky & Wine Bar have turned their passion for spirits into a massive collection?one that includes more than 125 wines and 150 whiskies. The bar's inventory features products from around the globe, but focuses primarily on wines and whiskies that have been crafted or grown in Washington. Visitors can dip into both selections on a daily basis, all while soaking up recommendations from Salud's wine- and whisky-wise staff. They can also try out the bar's own barrel-aged cocktails: pre-mixed drinks that have gone through the same aging process as other distilled spirits in order to alter their character and flavor.
