Clotilde Barnes's passion for holistic healthcare and nutrition has led her around the globe. After graduating from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de Mexico, the native of Veracruz, Mexico, went on to train at the Western College for Medical Assistance and the San Francisco School of Massage while becoming a licensed medical aesthetician. Her journey to the U.S. in 2000 drew her deeper into the medical field, affording her the opportunity to work with family doctors, dermatologists, and chiropractors. Barnes has pooled everything that science and ancient traditions have taught her, and has owned her own business since 2008.
Barnes promotes health and well-being with alternative therapies such as reflexology sessions, which balance bodily energy via pressure points in the feet. Organic chemical peels exfoliate skin with gentle enzymes and minerals to diminish fine lines. She also performs photofacials that employ light-emitting diodes, diachronic lamps, or Lite-Brite pins to boost collagen production and combat signs of aging.
Led by owner Kimberly Thompson, an entrepreneur, mother, writer, and former model, the clinical staff at Shangri-la Medispa helps busy clients to look and feel their best. A physician tends to both their inner and outer needs by administering cosmetic fillers and overseeing the weight-management program. An experienced medical aesthetician fine-tunes appearances with laser and microcurrent treatments, chemical peels, and waxing. The medispa has also developed its own product line, Shangri-La Skin By Kim. The team also includes a registered nurse who can advise patients on their treatment options or answer any questions, from “how much downtime is required?” to “is the human appendix an extraterrestrial tracking device?”
The crew performs services in whimsically themed treatment rooms filled with shabby-chic tables and dressers. Clients can relax in spaces decorated with such touches as a colorful London sign and lamps that resemble the Eiffel Tower and an antique streetlamp. In the black-and-white facial room, a picture of Marilyn Monroe glamorously oversees skincare treatments.
Nnedi Iwuchukwu wears many hats. In addition to being a certified personal trainer and Zumba instructor, she’s a licensed massage therapist and boasts clientele ranging from charitable organizations to the Dallas Cowboys. Through continuing education at Parker University's College of Chiropractic and the Body Business School for Massage, Nnedi gained an intricate understanding of physiology and how to ease tension with Thai acupressure, hot-stone therapy, and deep-tissue pressure. Furthermore, Nnedi’s own fondness for kickboxing, cycling, and running laps on a gigantic hamster wheel lend her an intimate knowledge of how the human body responds to rigorous athletic exercise, which allows her to better soothe post-workout bodies with signature bodywork.
Robert Marrufo Jr. understands that every client experiences stress and pain in different ways. As a licensed massage therapist with extensive knowledge of traditional Western and Eastern modalities, Robert customizes each massage he delivers by blending modalities to create an approach that addresses each visitor's specific needs. Long, flowing Swedish strokes gently soothe tension along the surface, deep-tissue techniques focus on the deeper causes of chronic muscle pains, and warmed river stones can help loosen weary musculature. Additionally, Robert can use holistically focused modalities—including acupressure, Thai massage, and reflexology treatments—to promote a greater sense of inner peace and address energetic imbalances throughout the body.
Massage therapist Maribel Rodriguez has dedicated more than 10 years in the industry to bolster her healing powers and curate a tranquil treatment facility. Spa services are performed by Maribel and her staff of aestheticians and massage therapists and include specialty treatments that incorporate mechanical exfoliation, organic creams, and chemical solutions. The 50-minute organic facial combines steam and an organic fruit cleanser to open pores and clear them with paprika exfoliation, and hot stones glide across backs during gentle-healing massages. The team also specializes in peels, microdermabrasion, ear candling, and waxing services that remove hair more humanely than industrial-strength flypaper.
At three locations across the Metroplex area, licensed massage therapists at The Massage Co. have loosened muscles and reduced stress during more than 40,000 massages. They customize seven different modalities, ranging from the targeted finger pressure of trigger-point therapy to the ancient art of reflexology, which is designed to address health issues throughout the whole body via channels in the feet. Massage therapy's myriad health benefits include better circulation, improved flexibility, and an enhanced capacity for creative thought, which comes in handy when converting your twin mattress to a king-size using nothing but bubble wrap.
