Jazzercise is 60 minutes of cardio, strength training, and stretching that incorporates moves from hip-hop, yoga, Pilates, jazz dance, kickboxing, and resistance training with handheld weights. Dancing With the Stars multiple-champion Cheryl Burke is a big fan of Jazzercise's improvisational workouts, though luckily you won't need her dance moves to get the most out of your class. If you're prone to first-class jitters, though, you can review the basic moves online before you go. Expect to burn off up to 500 calories with each go-round.
The strength-provoking pillars at Studio Soiree support twirling bodies and arching backs concentrated on replicating a bevy of core-training techniques. Certified instructors kick off pole education with an introductory course required of all beginners. In Intro to Pole, students learn how to safely maneuver on and around the pole while developing elementary dance moves. Five advancing course levels are available, each building toward an eventual master's degree in anti-gravitational gumption. Studio Soiree provides a welcoming environment for students of all shapes, sizes, and fitness levels, and most classes are exclusively for women.
The trainers at Pure Workout have stripped away the glamour of giant, impersonal gyms. They usher guests into a no-excuses zone where simple weights and calisthenics reign supreme, leading their classes with a potent mix of fitness expertise and tough love. Their routines vary, but each boot-camp session sparks friendly competition between attendees as they flip tires, heft weights, and sprint up hills. With no regard for noncommittal members who sneak helium into their kettlebells, the staff prizes Pure Workout's exclusive atmosphere—a quality that earned the gym a feature on NBC 5 and the title of CityVoter's Best Boot Camp in 2012.
A trio of black-belted Moras sisters lead the diverse fitness curriculum at Amys Martial Arts. Melany, Amely, and Samy blend the disciplined technique they’ve displayed in national, collegiate, and international martial-arts competitions with coaching and referee experience as they teach students aged 3 and older. Children's tae-kwon-do classes develop motor skills, balance, and a positive attitude, and tumbling sessions develop the sense of balance needed to roll, cartwheel, and handspring. Adults can explore the physical and mental benefits of tae kwon do's full-body workout or jump-start their heart rate with kickboxing, Zumba, or imagining how they’d use tae kwon do to fend off a pack of wild rabbits.
The technicians at The Body Sculpt Xpress dedicate themselves exclusively to ultrasound-cavitation body sculpting, a noninvasive technique already popular in Europe and Australia. They customize treatments based on the thickness of fat and its distribution throughout the body. To accommodate clients’ schedules, the technicians offer appointments both in the office and at home with their mobile contouring machine transported on a parade float with a marching band.
In the Chase the Mayor 5K, Provo Mayor John R. Curtis will have a one-minute head start as throngs of citizens pace and roar with anticipation behind the starting line. After these 60 seconds are up, participants burst forth and book it 3.1 miles along University Avenue, hoping to stride past the finish line before the elected head of Provo does. If any entrant does beat his honor, they will win a custom window sticker commemorating the victory, as well as a lifetime pass to swim in any public fountain. Otherwise, the signature Provo City Marathon—a USATF-certified marathon and a Boston Marathon qualifier—sends runners on a rigorous, yet fun jaunt downhill toward postrace festivities. It is these types of exciting flourishes and thrilling stakes that form the principles of Run13’s mission to “make road races an event.” Run13 also organizes several other races, including half marathons, 10Ks, and 5Ks.For each race, the organization designates a charity to donate its proceeds to, often taking suggestions from its fans or the magic 8 ball that presides over all affairs.
Jess Thomas, the mastermind behind the military-style boot camps at Bootcamp with Jess, draws inspiration from his US Army and law enforcement careers, striving to shock patrons into making life-changing decisions about their health with his high-intensity "no pain, no gain" fitness philosophy. Bootcamp with Jess’s five locations resound with emphatic and loud positive encouragement given by Jess's troupe of fatigues-sporting instructors.
The boot camps commence with a five-day “hell week,” in which guests strap on 30-pound vests and perform weight-training, agility, and endurance exercises. Throughout their physical trials, patrons learn about the body's muscle groups and how to wrestle the exercise machines into submission long enough to complete a workout. At the end of "hell week," students honor their hard work during a graduation ceremony, where they shed their weighted vests and have their measurements taken to mark their starting statistics before embarking on their five-week fitness journey. Boot camps are complemented by sports massages and nutritional guidance, ensuring that all parts of the body are taken care of and patrons take a well-rounded approach to their wellness.
