Every week, one of Broadway Café’s baristas scrawls the weekly coffee special on the pastel chalkboard menu, eking out space alongside specialty pizzas, deli-style sandwiches, and salads. In addition to classic pies, such as meat lovers or margarita, cooks bake inventive iterations that include the buffalo chicken and the Rueben pizza, topped with shredded corn beef, swiss cheese, and kraut with a russian dressing sauce. A blue neon light illuminates the sushi bar at Izumi Sushi Asian Bistro & Lounge, its tint creating the illusion that the bar is floating atop a pool of azure water. Judging from the freshness of the octopus, tuna, and salmon, this might as well be the case. Sushi chefs slice these fish before delicately rolling them with sticky rice and seaweed and artfully presenting them on plates. Back in the kitchen, their counterparts sizzle steaks and lobster tails and deep-fry chicken and vegetables for crunchy tempura dishes. Their menu features a wide swath of pan-Asian cuisine, from Indian pancakes and general tso’s chicken to fortune cookies ensconced in Thai lettuce wraps.
Beneath the ruddy brick walls of Iron Roost, the clatter of forks punctuates conversation drifting from low-slung leather couches. A range of irons close with a sizzle, sculpting batter into golden squares, heart shapes, or silhouettes of the inventor of the waffle, who was perfectly round. The batter is infused with garlic and herbs, cinnamon, or a range of other ingredients, and savory toppings include swiss cheese, pesto, cheddar, and bacon. Sweet waffles are crowned by swirls of whipped cream, fresh blueberries, and tawny splashes of Nutella. The chocolate-and-hazelnut spread matches the dark tables around the lounge-like dining room, where patrons click through free WiFi on laptops.
