Once a month she leads a free class that focuses on a few postures and delves into the anatomy and benefits behind them—all she asks is that attendees bring clothing, canned goods, or monetary donations that Grace then purposes toward causes and groups.
Bikram Yoga Shelton's certified instructors lead 90-minute classes that take place within a sultry practice space with 58% humidity and temperatures that reach as high as 103 degrees. In the therapeutic heat, they help students of all abilities achieve deeper, safer stretches and detoxifying perspiration. They walk their pupils through two breathing exercises and a powerful sequence of 26 standing and seated poses in each class to challenge muscles more effectively than bench-pressing a chakra. Each posture helps unleash torrents of oxygenating circulation throughout the body, promoting healthy organ function as the sustained stretches bolster stamina and flexibility. Undefeated muay-thai master Andy Singh brings the techniques he perfected while winning eight championships with him when instructing students in the powerful kicks and lightning-fast blows for which his art is renowned. In Singh's brightly lit gym, traditional boxing gloves cushion students' hands as the aspiring martial artists study and spar across the red, padded floor. Occasionally, Singh assembles his classes in standing circles around him as he demonstrates a technique, which students can observe from all angles, whether it’s a particularly difficult kick or a strategy for dominating the dance floor at prom.
