Your hair?s sure to feel silkier once your stylist conditions it?learn why with Groupon?s close-up look at conditioner.
Although human hair may look smooth, each strand's outer layer?the cuticle?is actually quite rough. Under dry conditions, the tiny scales that cover its surface become raised and brittle, causing hairs to tangle and lose their shine. Conditioner aims to correct this problem by bonding a particular class of molecules, called cationic surfactants, to the cuticle. This is possible because keratin, the protein that makes up most of the hair shaft, bristles with negative ions, which attract the positively charged surfactants, coating each thread in a thin film that weighs it down and reduces frizz. (The negative charge of keratin is also what causes static whenever positive ions are stripped from the hair?the static that makes it possible to stick a balloon to the wall or to power a miner's headlamp.)
The other ingredients in conditioner don't always need ions to do their jobs well. Humectants suck in water from the surrounding air, thereby moisturizing the hair, and oils simply penetrate the cuticle. Glossers coat the hair with light-reflecting polymers, increasing shine, whereas other ingredients raise the acidity level of the conditioner, which helps protect the hair's protein structure.
Suna of Suna Salon & Spa has culled beauty secrets from all over the world, holding aesthetic licenses in Japan, Italy, France, Germany, and the United States. She voyaged from the shores of Istanbul to the wild, unexfoliated beaches of America 25 years ago to establish her first salon. Over the decades, Suna has gathered around her an elite team of beauticians with a range of expertise and an arsenal of quality products.
Her staff brightens nail treatments with Shellac and OPI polishes and deepens massages with hot stones. Stylists keep cranial shrubs in tiptop shape with Schwarzkopf Igora hair color and conditioning products from Moroccanoil. Suna herself specializes in threading, the ancient Middle Eastern art of removing hair with nothing but a strand of cotton and an elaborate system of cantilevers.
The chemical smells and boring waits that fill most barbershops are nowhere to be found at All Star Haircuts. That's because the shop's barbers, who have a combined 70 years of hair-snipping experience, use low-odor products and never make clients wait more than 10 minutes to get a haircut. Within the Sarasota shop, guests settle in for a little relaxation, enjoying a complimentary shampoo, neck massage, and neck trim while watching the flatscreen TVs that decorate every cutting station. The friendly staffers even go out of their way to leave personalized notes on each client's ticket, sending clients away with messages ranging from "Have a great day!" to "Put $900 on the fifth horse in the sixth race."
At Hair 1 and Spa 2, Charity (DeSear) Zeigler draws upon two decades of experience in the beauty industry, transforming men's and women's looks with an array of relaxing treatments. In the salon area, skilled hands craft haircuts, highlights, lowlights, and corrective colors. Fingers and toes relax during spa mani-pedis featuring heat therapy and soothing scrubs. Staff banishes body fuzz with traditional waxing services, as well as laser hair-removal and electrolysis treatments that can prepare legs for the beach or enhance an arm wrestler's aerodynamic advantage.
