Stomp has thrilled audiences with mind-blowing percussive pieces for more than 20 years, touring 350 cities and 36 countries across the globe. Kinetic dance numbers incorporate ubiquitous everyday objects, using brooms, sheets of newspaper, and Zippo lighters to fashion intricate beats and sterling examples of what children should not do. The current tour revamps the classic show, phasing out old numbers and adding in exciting set pieces involving paint cans and tractor tires. The BJCC's capacious concert hall provides plenty of room for airborne harmonies to stretch their wings while orchestra- and tier-level seats provide enviable views of onstage numbers and chimpanzees capering in the catwalk.
For the last several years, more than 2,000 people have congregated in DeBardeleben Park for one of the most anticipated events of the summer: the Bob Sykes BBQ & Blues Festival. There, guests can enjoy the summer sun while listening to local and national blues acts, grabbing a plate of Bob Sykes?s famous ribs, or watching kids play on the inflatable slides. Food booths, crafts, and activities draw crowds of festival-goers throughout the day, as do the face-painting booth and cool picnicking spots under the trees. Meanwhile, blues music filters through the open air like frisbees who can?t find their owners. A portion of the festival's proceeds benefit local charities.
Literature, music, and food come together at Taste of Pelham, an annual fundraising event that benefits Pelham Library Guild. Shelby's, Cozumel Grill, and more than two dozen other local restaurants will serve up samples that—according to Pelham Library Guild president Debbie Parrott—add up to the equivalent of a five-course meal for each guest. Lauded authors and celebrities such as MasterChef winner Whitney Miller will be in attendance, and a local jazz band sets the auditory ambiance. Pelham Library Guild plans to use the funds from the event to build a new library for the community.
At the Southern Bridal Faire, planners and couples-to-be gather in the Alabama Ballroom at the Renaissance Montgomery Hotel & Spa at the Convention Center to meet with vendors and gather ideas for decorations, fashions, photos, and venues for their upcoming nuptials. Experienced DJs, photographers, and designers meet face-to-face with future brides and grooms, which makes the wedding-planning process less stressful and brings couples a few steps closer to making their dream events a reality.
