One of the only barbers in the area using a gentlemanly straight razor, Uomo offers customers the conscientiousness and community of traditional barbershops without any of the single combat dueling or rampant tuberculosis of yore. Enjoy a bout of retrofit relaxation with the shop's neck shave, an old-fashioned endeavour that features a straight razor, hot towels, and lively discussion of the incursions of the Ottoman Empire. Today's package allows you to channel the comforts of Uomo at home with a DIY-duo of the shop's own line of natural shaving products. The three-in-one shave balm (a $24.99 value) combines the soothing powers of lotion with the stern protection of aftershave, while the lye-free shaving cream (a $34.99 value) quenches razor burn as it ushers blades across unruly fields of stubble.
Though most people don’t associate scissors, needles, and popcorn with one another, all three play a big part in Design House Salon’s continuing allure. The salon’s owners, Chantelle Pasychny and Kurtis Brown, blend their passions for hairstyling and acupuncture in a menu of spa services designed to promote well-being from the inside out. Along with their beautifying hair treatments and chi-balancing acupuncture sessions, they nourish bodies with munch-ready popcorn that they purchase from the nearby Kernels Popcorn store.
When they aren’t snacking or counting how many popped kernels fit in a jar of Barbicide, clients can tune in to the wall-mounted television or admire the decor’s minimalistic theme. Nestled inside the historic Hudson Building, the salon goes for an industrial-chic look that incorporates the structure's original concrete pillars and reclaimed pieces of wood.
With more than two decades in the salon industry, Kim Anh has learned that beauty routines don't need to be complicated. Her salon, Simplified. A Hair Shoppe., embraces this philosophy, as evidenced by a company mission that aims to "streamline your hair needs" and a Facebook page full of beginner-friendly hairstyle tutorials. Their service menu is refreshingly pared down to haircuts, color, and styling, and their product collection consists mainly of paraben-free shampoos and conditioners from Bain de Terre. The salon itself is also quite minimalist, with sage walls and uncluttered stylist stations offset by bright orchids and a glimmering chandelier, because most stylists need light to see what they're doing.
Chop Shop Hair Company's growing franchise of rock 'n’ roll–themed hair salons outfits customers with hip hairdos at locations across the lower mainland. The salons were the brainchild of best friends and business partners Daniel Hudon and Michael Procter, who in the spring of 2005 established a new breed of haircare centre that boasted decor marked by hot-rod chrome, black leather salon chairs, and 1950s garage accents. At each location, both men and women get glammed out with chic pixie haircuts, beehives, and pompadours at toolbox-style salon stations. A full colour bar splashes new hairstyles with bold hues and transports patrons to a time when letters were still handwritten and each hug was actually a pat-down searching for communist pamphlets.
