Tempest Freerunning Academy's trainers invite everyone, regardless of their age, athleticism, or experience, to learn more about the philosophy of parkour and the fluid acrobatics of freerunning. The academy features training areas developed by X-Games course designer Nate Wessel, which consist of ledges, ramps, railings, short walls, and other obstacles that students learn to effortlessly vault and traverse over time. Classes meet throughout the week and cater to the capabilities of attendees. During the beginners' sessions, visitors will learn fundamental parkour movements and methodologies while developing the strength, balance, and body awareness that they will need to master the flips and bar techniques introduced in more advanced lessons. Above all else, these lessons emphasize the core philosophy that people can learn to seamlessly navigate real-world environments with grace and free-flowing sequences of movement. Safety remains a priority for the trainers at all times though, and they ensure that students respect their limitations as well as their surroundings before attempting to perfect a new technique.

Generally, adulthood forces people to give up childish pleasures, robbing them of the joy associated with playing in puddles, unearthing hidden treasure, and being silly in public. Sierra Adventure Sports wants grownups to regress, if only for a day. In service of that goal, the company organizes a variety of novel races that range from city scavenger hunts for the casual adventurer to creative triathlon courses for the ambitious athlete. The Mad Mud Run, for instance, challenges participants to sprint and frolic through a dirty and deliciously fun outdoor obstacle course littered with manmade obstructions such as cargo nets, hills of hay bales, monkey bars, and slimy mud pits. Extreme Heat Adventure Races combine equal parts triathlon and scavenger hunt to create a 10?12K journey filled with running, river rafting, and mystery challenges that could pit teams against anything from blindfolded puzzles to wall climbs. Most Sierra Adventure Sports events encourage racers to compete in costumes of all types save for gremlins, which multiply in water and unfairly dominate the timed results.

BOLDFITNESS owner Jeff Archibald offers functional fitness regimens such as weightlifting, core training and body-weight exercises. Jeff helps clients of all ages and abilities get in shape, reach their full athletic potential, recover from injuries, or train for sporting events. With scenic workouts along the Santa Monica Mountains, Jeff may take clients walking, hiking, running, and mountain or road biking. Shorter workouts may take clients to unconventional locales such as the 4th Street Stairs in Santa Monica, an ideal setting for full-body conditioning. But Jeff doesn't eschew traditional fitness facilities entirely—he regularly works with individuals in homes, at a health club, and at an indoor rock climbing venue. But at some point between reps, he'll likely suggest a trip outdoors for cardio training.

Nobody leaves the Splash Dash 5K dry. A series of splash stations equipped with massive showers, shallow pools, and careening water balloons litter the 3.1-mile course, waiting to soak every participant before they cross the finish line. Down one straightaway, runners may confront a gang of volunteers ready to blast them with water guns, only to turn a corner and face the deluge of a fire hose. After braving the watery gauntlet, runners of all ages celebrate their victories at the Splash Dash Bash after party, where prizes are awarded for the best costumes and finish times as runners dance to music and attempt to dry off by matching the speed of their washer's spin cycle.
