In the unusual parlance of the Hunger Runs 5K, runners are “dedications,” teams are “organizations,” spectators are “assemblies,” and the race is known simply as “the hunt.” The race’s creators, the “huntmakers,” devise a series of obstacles specifically designed to encourage teamwork and camaraderie, and they set up “challenge centers” demanding expert bow-and-arrow skills, simian climbing abilities, and courage in the face of flaming objects. Organizations that finish fastest or with the most points in their designated wave earn bragging rights, awards, and cheek pinches from their proud grandmothers. Dedications are strongly encouraged to wear fun costumes and comfortable sneakers and to come bearing team spirit and the will to win.
Fitness industry veteran Dulcinea Lee Hellings's goal is to bring a high-quality, effective exercise regimen to people who don't love big gyms or can't afford personal trainers. In 2004, she realized that mornings could be used for more than hitting the snooze button over and over for two hours, and founded Boot Camp "Morning Crunch!" to help fledgling exercisers whip into shape.
She designs her all-levels programs to be scream-free morning motivators⎯the first stop in her patrons' journey of daily accomplishments. The fast-paced, ever-changing circuit of strength and cardio exercises keeps bodies guessing and minds from becoming bored. Each of the boot camp's 12 outdoor locations has a different dedicated trainer who gets to know each student personally, remembering their names and memorizing any interesting freckle patterns. They complement their morning routines with a smattering of evening options for those who prefer to work out after the day's activities.
At Fitness Compound, exercisers of all ages can sweat freely in classes that range from the high-intensity intervals of Insanity to the meditative martial art of tai chi. A roster of certified, encouraging trainers lead a host of other classes such as Zumba, krav maga, and TRX suspension training.
Julie Bond Rhyne's singing and dancing career took her to Broadway, on tour with Latin superstars, and into recording studios and movie sets. Although her life was filled with the joys of performing, in 1998 Julie found her greatest career satisfaction from an unexpected source—Pilates. Almost immediately, she wanted to teach the empowering exercise form, and after earning her teacher certification, Julie opened X-Treme Pilates as a means of sharing her newfound passion. Today, with a small crew of teachers, Julie fulfills her clients' needs with core-strengthening workouts available daily. In each of their classes, instructors use Joseph Pilates's famed machine, the Reformer, whose system of pulleys and sliding panels deepens core engagement while reducing stress on the joints. To maintain focus, the workout space includes nine machines facing a wall of mirrors, which remind students to double-check their posture and existence throughout the class.
West Coast Boot Camp's Adrian Pietrariu is at his best during the heat of athletic competition. Not content with dominating opponents during taekwondo matches, Adrian assembled a team of seasoned instructors that now forms the core of WCBC’s training staff. Their signature boot camp meets in places such as beaches and parking lots to get hearts pumping and calories burning. Adrian also helps individuals unlock inner combatants with martial-arts classes, achieve their athletic aspirations with one-on-one coaching, and learn the difference between a basketball and an overripe cantaloupe with sport-specific training.
Seeking to find a middle ground between cardio and strength-training workouts, The Training Center’s certified instructors built a program that allows their students to kill two birds with one kettlebell. In addition to the cannonball-like weights, trainers call on equipment such as sandbags, ropes, and TRX straps during both group classes and personal-training sessions, which begin with functional-movement tests that help determine a course of action for each client.
