Chief instructor John Limcaco, a fourth dan black belt with a training career that started at age 7, leads his team of expert martial artists in extending their passion for karate to students of all ages. In addition to teaching the traditional striking and kicking moves, they also help guests get in shape with the JOLT program that uses high-intensity interval training and TRX suspension to build strength and endurance.
The press certainly likes California Family Fitness, granting the exercise venue such awards as a top spot on KCRA-3's 2012 A-List and Sacramento News and Review's Best of Sacramento 2012 Award. The press, however, isn't the top priority for the gym's staff; they believe that, to quote their about CFF page, “awards don't greet you at the door.” Instead, they depend upon their dedicated staffers at the front desk, chaperones at the Kidz Club play zone, and personal trainers to make families of clients feel at home. Certified personal trainers take aspiring exercisers of all ages through regimens that make use of the 16 available locations' ample workout machinery. Seasoned instructors, meanwhile, hold group fitness classes, free with a membership, fostering community as they incinerate calories during high-energy Zumba, step aerobics, Turbo Kick, and Hip Hop Hustle. Nine of the locations boast pools that host swim lessons taught by certified water-safety instructors.
While hitting the gym, parents can drop wee ones at childcare havens lined with playgrounds and age-appropriate investment manuals. After breaking a sweat on the exercise floor, clients can also shed excess body moisture in saunas and tanning beds.
In the recently remodeled sunlit studio, yogis of all shapes sprawl out on colorful mats and towels. They stretch and meditate in the sauna-like air, which is heated to 105 degrees to aid flexibility and draw out toxins. When class begins, students follow a certified instructor through 26 postures and two breathing exercises. After class, they head back to the lobby to rehydrate or head to the changing room to check their cell phones, pagers, or portable telegraph machines—all of which instructors request stay outside the studio. Students of all levels and athletic abilities experience the benefits of these sessions, including enhanced strength, reduced stress, and increased energy.

Gloves are provided during the one-month trial membership, as are a set of reusable pro-quality hand wraps and complimentary motivational mumbling from Burgess Meredith (all three subject to availability).

My Gym, which currently has more than 200 international locations, began more than 20 years ago as a structured place for children to safely play, acquire new skills, and romp off a sugar buzz. All classes are organized according to age level (starting as young as 6 weeks) and designed to incorporate the latest physiological, psychological, and meteorological research. The Elk Grove and Folsom locations offer classes for all developmental degrees, including the Tiny Tykes class, a session for parents and babies that focuses on movement, and the Champions class, designed to help 5- to 9-year-olds master sports and gymnastics skills. Exact schedules vary by location; click here to see the Elk Grove lineup and here for Folsom's lineup.
