A holistic health-care facility that unites a team of alternative practitioners under one roof, Essential Wellness strives to relieve patients of their ailments using an approach that centers on the cause of symptoms instead of the symptoms themselves. For example, when discussing the treatment of depression, instead of prescribing traditional solutions, such as antidepressants or bank vaults filled with bubble wrap, Essential Wellness' owner rattles off a litany of alternative therapies, including constipation relief, positive thinking, meditation, exercise, and probiotics. The staff helps heal patients with comprehensive natural medical care that can include naturopathy as well as wellness classes, health programs, and detoxification services that can stabilize immune systems. The team also deals with nutrient deficiencies and works with patients who suffer from hormonal imbalances, digestive disorders, adrenal fatigue, and more, Shades of turquoise fill treatment rooms with a color meant to awaken clients' confidence, and framed affirmations such as "I love myself" and "Those water-park guards will never stop me" inspire people to look inward for healing strength.

Within Aesthetic Plastic Surgery's Norfolk location, The Downtown Spa & Laser Center pairs the results-oriented approach of a medical facility with the relaxing amenities of a spa. Flickering candles gently illuminate the treatment rooms, where a soundtrack of natural harmonies surrounds patients with the soothing noise of rain falling or a park ranger learning to read. In the chambers, specialists wield laser-emitting devices designed to combat the appearance of unwanted hairs, spider veins, and wrinkles. With at least one aesthetician always on site, the center's staff also uses medical-grade skincare treatments to do everything from calming acne outbreaks to exfoliating dead skin cells.

Todd Beckman founded MassageLuXe with the notion that five-star service should not be limited to pricey hotels. Today, the spa's team of qualified massage therapists and aestheticians continues to realize and build upon Todd's initial aspirations. A spa day at MassageLuXe includes all the perks one might expect from a vacation resort, from facials and massages to full-body waxing and baths in warm, effervescent champagne. The company's services tend to exceed expectations in other ways, too; along with standard massages such as Swedish and deep tissue, therapists are proficient in specialty modalities such as hot stone, reflexology, and aromatherapy.

Licensed massage therapist Nancy Domond designed Exhale Day Spa as a small, soft-lit sanctuary, a place where the only sound is soothing music, and not the prattling of a guy who knows a lot about koalas. Her massage services are comprehensive, with eight styles ranging from simple neck and shoulder work to full-body massage by two therapists at the same time.

Joseph Lupino, founder and owner of Anew Body Oasis, has been garnering massage knowledge since he was 5 years old. Following in his grandmother's footsteps, Lupino learned the art of massage and its ability to treat much more than just cranky muscles. "[My grandparents] were not prone to run to a doctor like we do today," he said, a philosophy that has stuck with him through his working life. Lupino received a degree in psychology, and he quickly found his skills in massage came in handy in his new profession. He used "massage to calm irate patients in the psychiatric wards." His coworkers warned that entering a frenzied patient's room without a sedative in hand would get him killed, but a few minutes after he had done just that, "[he] walked out [without] a scratch," and the patient was peaceful again.

Though Lupino loves the study of psychology, he kept coming back to massage. He eventually got his massage license and, in 1991, founded Anew Body Oasis. His diverse professional repertoire has left him with stellar interpersonal skills—he is able to assess what kind of music clients want to hear during treatments, how experienced they are with massage, and what the name of their firstborn child should be. A new massage client may receive a gentler, more soothing massage, and veteran guests are apt to receive firmer strokes. Lupino's team of therapists uses combinations of 10 massage modalities during candlelit treatments tailored to individual needs.
