At Dream Body Boot Camp, which was voted San Diego A-List's best boot camp of 2012, trainer Matthew Johnson and his staff of specialized trainers help patrons to quickly sculpt physiques into top form during indoor and outdoor workouts that pair cardio moves with strength-boosting exercises. Instead of painting muscle ripples onto participants’ abs, each of Johnson’s instructors draws from a kinesiology degree or a national personal-training certification when designing a new 60-minute workout each day. Before their first class, students meet with Johnson to get acquainted and set their fitness goals, such as looking good in a bikini or ripping through a T-shirt to reveal their swimsuit with one powerful body flex. In the course of 10 minutes, he asks clients what they’d like to achieve in class and how they’ve pursued their goals in the past.
Once the talking ends, the training begins, and the motivational instructors put patrons to work hefting dumbbells, straining against Trx suspension gear, and flipping giant tires end over end. Johnson and his trainers leave long runs out of their workouts, opting instead for tire hopping, jumping rope, and other dynamic exercises to elevate heart rates.
A flurry of jabs, hooks, and uppercuts is always in the forecast at Rhino’s Boxing’s 5,000-square-foot facility, where beginners and pros alike can throw calories against the ropes in classes that impart focus, discipline, and proper techniques. Skilled instructors don weathered gloves and whip sparring students into fighting shape, leading coed cardio workouts wherein adults and kids aged 6 and older can take out their stresses on punching bags stuffed with poorly graded school essays and traffic lights that refuse to turn green. Boxers with dreams of one day hoisting heavyweight belts can step into the USA Boxing legal-size ring with the amateur team or can conduct their own private workouts five days a week. The schedule also hosts open sparring on Tuesday and Friday nights, during which self-disciplined students can use the ring for practice or settle long-standing disputes over who should take out the trash.
Yoga Munkey & More's enthusiastic instructors help students boost energy and hone flexibility with an array of dynamic yoga and dance classes. The studio's varied schedule boasts five days of morning and evening sessions to accommodate busy pupils and hard-up yoga mats who work jobs as welcome mats on the weekend. During exhilarating Hatha yoga classes, aspiring yogis seek relaxation and balance, methodically stretching limbs and awakening consciousness with harmonious, mindful breathing. Pupils ease into a more gradual series of asanas in Very Gentle/Lunchtime Yoga, which seamlessly melds meditative movement with synchronized breathing for a beginner and injured-athlete friendly workout. Alternatively, the sultry Latin choreography of Salsa Dance and Zumba Latin Dance Fitness recharges sluggish sinews, burns fat, and inspires world-weary sombreros to break out their favorite hat-dance moves again.
