In the middle of The Wave Waterpark, people lie upon colorful rafts that float gently down the lazy river. It’s a serene way to soak up some rays and keep cool. But in the center of the lazy river, separated by raised concrete and a foot bridge, an adventure awaits: the Flow Rider. This simulated surfable ocean wave dares visitors to try and hang ten without falling off their boards into the safe, if rollicking waters.

These two attractions represent the broad spectrum of activity at The Wave, a family-friendly destination equally suited to mild-mannered relaxation, adventurous fun, or something in between. Other rides include a tangle of waterslides, such as the Slam Dunk, an enclosed-tunnel body slide with plenty of twists, and Rippity’s Rainforest, a kid-friendly playground gushing with fountains and waterfalls.

From April to September, lifeguards teach swim lessons in the park’s competition pool for kids as young as 6 months, as well as adults. The Wave is also an ideal spot for birthday parties, with rental cabanas that can fit as many as 30 people or one enormous birthday clown, and a Surf Spot Grill that refuels revelers with burgers, burritos, and pizza.

The 18-hole Reidy Creek Golf Course covers 2,582 yards in the rugged hills of Escondido, supplying guests with a scenic backdrop for club-based revelry. The rolling terrain of the par 54 course—intertwined with manmade obstacles such as sculpted bunkers, sinuous lakes, and wind—challenges golfers as they attempt holes-in-one. The distinctive course, designed by the notable engineers at Cal Olson Golf Architecture not to contain any two identical holes, contains a golf shop, café, and golf clinics taught by PGA professionals.

While many go on to teach the game once their playing days are over, few golfers do so while continuing to tour professionally. Fred Hanover, on the other hand, does just that, and with exceptional results: he has been competing in Canadian Tour events since 1987 and has also served as a golf coach in the California State University system for more than 15 years, even winning the NCAA championship in 1997. Though he’s coached six All-American men and five All-American women over the course of his collegiate coaching career, Fred also gives lessons to beginning and intermediate players at The Golf Coach. Fred customizes lessons to the needs of each student, teaching them to hit the ball farther, straighter, and closer to the rude neighbor’s windshield. Additionally, lessons teach players the importance of course management and mental strength.

Self-defense is at the core of each technique taught at White Dragon Martial Arts. Whether students are practicing kung fu or MMA, they'll learn how to successfully defend themselves against intimidating opponents who may be larger in size or wearing a superhero cape. Kickboxing classes add an element of cardiovascular fitness, tai chi sessions slow down the moves to a meditative pace, and grappling lessons provide step-by-step instructions on how to take someone down to the floor. Instructors also spend one-on-one time with students during personal-training sessions that focus on perfecting punches and kicks.
