Voted No. 3 on the 2011 Beacon’s Best for top movie theaters, Lake Cinemas 8 advertises a rotating octet of first-run films on a nostalgic marquee that heralds the refurbished theater's entryway. Viewers settle into comfy seats as they share puffed kernels of corn, sip sodas, and, as the lights dim, recall fond memories of tunneling into bank vaults. Visitors can choose from a selection of popular new releases or anxiously anticipate a bevy of coming attractions.
"Lively characterizations and an irrepressible sense of fun”—that's how Cleveland Scene once summed up the strengths of Ohio Shakespeare Festival. It's a fitting approach to the works of the ever-sly Bard, especially given the fest's convivial outdoor setting. Dusk finds spectators on the edges of their picnic blankets as immortal plots twist and turn before their eyes and sandwiches.
In its 18th season, the Ballet Theatre of Ohio stages full-length classical ballet starring both youth and adult dancers. Pre-show melodies will billow from the Akron Civic Theatre’s "Mighty Wurlitzer" organ, which rises from beneath the stage like an undead piano to serenade settling guests with festive holiday music. Along with the spectacle of the performance, bask in the magnificence of the historic theater itself, whose interior was designed to resemble a Moorish castle interior. European antiques, Italian sculptures, and a ceiling set with drifting clouds and twinkling star lights craft an atmosphere ready to boil over with holiday magic.
Since it was founded in 1887, the Tuesday Musical Association has excelled in providing the public with high-quality musical entertainment. Seats will either be orchestra (section II, rows O–Q) or grand tier (section IV, rows G–L)—tickets will be held at will call or mailed directly to you after reserving your seats. Watch Marc-André Hamelin strum his piano to the tune of Haydn, Mozart, Chopin, and more, or listen to the State Symphony Capella Chorus of Russia, a 50-member song squad whose outstanding choruses nourish the ears of audience members like the heartwarming chirps of a canary echoing from the inside of a vodka bottle. Grab the November 30 performance to hear The Cleveland Orchestra sonically dust ears with elegant, symphonic interpretations of Saariaho, Mozart, and Holst.
