Sweet Frog’s frozen-yogurt flavors go beyond the norm. In addition to cookies ‘n’ cream and greek yogurt with honey, the lineup of 75 varieties includes maple-bacon donut, cake batter, and dulce de leche. Patrons can sprinkle on toppings such as fresh fruit and candies, then savor their confetti’d confections in the lime-green-and-pink restaurant. Smiling frogs and funky white hanging lamps give the stores an air of fun, but founder Derek Cha is interested in giving more than that to the community; through Sweet Frog, he sponsors children in need and dispatches frog mascots to those who need encouragement.

Jamba Juice, the sunny West Coast import, has finally spread their brand of the California lifestyle to the nation’s capital, thanks to its menu blend of smoothies, wraps, flatbreads and sandwiches. The relatively new Dupont Circle location is a great option for on-the-go business types or anyone traipsing through this bustling slice of metro DC. Of course, the fast casual chain is known for their whole fruit smoothies, which come blended in any number of ways, including with a “boost” pack that helps to boost your immune system or give you a jolt of energy. Health-conscious folks have plenty of options themselves, with low-calorie smoothies available from the menuboard, each with their own vitamin-rich, antioxidant-heavy powers, plus a few vegetable juice options. Anyone feeling indulgent can stick with the sweet stuff, like peanut butter, chocolate and available sherbet flavors.

In comic books, heroes are typically born out of tragedy. Such was the case for Protein Bar's founder, Matt Matros. At a young age, Matt lost his father to a sudden heart attack. Matt struggled with weight himself, and by the time he reached 22, he set out on a mission to change things. He lost 50 pounds by committing to a healthy lifestyle devoid of junk food and day trips to the Big Rock Candy Mountain. But Matt's mission to change things didn't stop with himself. During his weight-loss journey, Matt noticed a dearth of food options that were both healthy and convenient. Protein Bar was his response to this dearth. The Protein Bar menu focuses heavily on high-protein burritos, salads, and quinoa bowls mixed with all-natural chicken and seasonal ingredients. A special blend of six types of vegetables (named the Super 6 Salad Mix) define the vitamin-rich salads, which pair well with drinks blended from fresh fruit, milks, and proteins. Before lunch, the restaurants dole out breakfast burritos and protein-rich oatmeal. Since Matt opened the first Protein Bar with his life savings in 2009, the restaurant has expanded to more than a dozen locations in Chicago, Colorado, and Washington, D.C. Its menu and its founder's mission continue to gain new fans and ample press attention. Crain?s Chicago Business even deemed Matt Matros among their "40 Under 40: 2012."
