Housed in expansive facilities that allow ample room for tumbles and mid-air twists, ENA Gymnastics’ classes and birthday parties unite form with fun for young athletes and aspiring acrobats of all skill levels. Children 5 years and older can hone their foam-pit high-dives and slinky impersonations in general gymnastics classes, designed to boost strength, coordination, and self-confidence without compromising safety. The program lasts 90 minutes, the first 15 of which are dedicated to stretching before students advance on to three different gymnastics events and a strength-training period. While girls practice their tumbles and learn how to breakdance on the balance beam, boys can test their dexterity on the parallel bars or mount a wild pommel horse that sporadically whinnies and bucks to increase the degree of difficulty.
The track and field training staff at SCI has coached and trained more than 30,000 athletes?and that statistic is always growing. At his training facility, Sports Conditioning Institute, he and his team encourage athletes with sports-specific training, focusing on games including hockey and volleyball, and lead fit-seekers in two boot-camp styles. The common thread running through every workout is Vaccaro?s focus on avoiding overstressing bodies and preventing injuries. He emphasizes short and frequent workouts, for example, rather than long routines that can lead to sustaining injury, becoming burnt out, or accidentally running into another country without your passport. To complement coached workouts, the gym hosts an array of free weights and cardio machines for solo sessions.
Few yoga studios can say that they've created their own styles of yoga, but at Highland Yoga, Anelyn and Stephen Tortorello did just that. With the help of their instructors, these yogis developed Yogacarya, which marries Western yoga postures with the introspection, meditation, and self-realization encouraged by the Yoga Sutras. The open, clean studio hosts a rotating gallery of local artists' paintings and photography to inspire reflection.
Their 32 weekly classes—available in beginner, intermediate, and advanced levels—also embrace the widely popular Vinyasa and Hatha methods along with the lesser-known Kripalu and Kundalini yogas. To further foster mind-body connections, the studio's licensed massage therapists ease muscular stress, taut muscles, and uptight grizzly bears with myofascial, Swedish, and Thai yoga bodywork.
