  • Sylvan Learning Ctr
The staff members at Sylvan Learning's numerous centers understand that each child learns differently. Therefore, they don’t try to implement a uniform tutoring system; instead, they design custom lesson programs based on the results of a skills assessment using diagnostic tools and one-on-one interviews. Tutors work with students from pre-kindergarten through grade 12, illuminating topics ranging from basic reading and writing to remembering complex algebraic formulas without having them tattooed on your chest. Many of Sylvan’s instructors work in local schools, so they are intimately familiar with common curricula and understand how to gear lessons toward optimal results. Camps and after-school and summer classes can ready high-schoolers for the rigors of the ACT or the SAT, or they can help students to wow college-admissions officers with their superior essay-writing skills.

  • Bristol Art Studio
After doing battle with law school and the Rhode Island State Bar Exam, Jacqueline Vaughn needed to relax. She sought out a yoga studio, something that used to do the trick for her back home in New Jersey. Rather than the quick destresser she expected, she found a community and a home in a little 700-square-foot space with other yogis. Then, in 2013, her yoga studio moved. She was torn, for it wasn't just the practice and the people that were important to her, but the space itself. She sat wondering about the fate of the studio one night, admiring the stars, when inspiration suddenly struck. She grabbed some paints and began to recreate the starry sky she saw before her. As her vision took shape, a plan formed in her mind. She would transform her old yoga school into a community art space. Bristol Art Studio was born. These days, Jacqueline and a team of instructors host classes in painting, drawing, sculpture, sewing, and creative writing. They gear the curriculum to artists of all ages and ability levels. Kids can explore self-expression and technique in structured lessons. Adults can bring a bottle of wine to enjoy as they unlock their creativity with a brush or get their hands dirty in a bit of clay by sculpting an impromptu wine glass. Whichever class a student takes, they will find a safe haven as Jacqueline once did in her yoga studio.

  • The Studio of Deenie Pacik
Artist Deenie Pacik, armed with 14 years of crafting fused-glass artwork, 18 years of creating stained-glass, and nine years teaching at schools such as Franklin Pierce University, imparts her expertise during a variety of classes. Working out of Deenie's fully equipped home studio, small groups of students learn to fuse dichroic glass and powder into everything from shiny pendants to new work boots for Cinderella's cousin. Projects transform into translucent objets d?art in the glass kiln, which, as Deenie tells the Warwick Beacon, heats glass at three times the temperature used to bake a pizza, or eight billion times the heat used to glaze an ice sculpture.
