Though her passion for glamour goes all the way back to her early childhood, it wasn’t until Jeanice Bouvier Davis leapt into Manhattan’s Robert Fiance Hair Academy that she began to realize her true obsession. After graduating with honors, Davis went on to train with industry leaders such as Aveda and Paul Mitchell—groups that allowed her to build a solid understanding of how to properly serve a multicultural clientele. Armed with a varied set of skills, she eventually took another bold leap by opening Hair Cafe in 2004. Situated directly across from the Eastern Market Metro station, the salon gives Jeanice and her diverse team of male and female stylists the chance to focus on a variety of high-end services, from artful cuts and curls to relaxers and keratin treatments.

With separate areas for cutting and coloring, the O Salon is as well-designed and sleek as the haircut you will receive from one of the stylists inside. The Georgetown salon is a designated L’Oreal Professionnel Salon, so you can rest assured that color treatments are a specialty. O was also the first salon in Washington DC to carry INOA, an ammonia-free permanent hair color. Salon stylists say INOA color lasts longer and gives hair a lot of shine, meaning less frequent trips to the salon for touch-ups and root dyes. Aside from cuts, coloring and highlights, O Salon does keratin treatments, blowouts and Balayage. For the uninitiated, the latter is an alternative to foil highlights, where color is painted on the hair to create dimension and depth.

Urban Escape by Subairi lives up to its name. The Adams Morgan storefront is a combo day spa, hair salon and skin care center. The salon’s stylists, including owner Subairi, like to be innovative, although they also give standard cuts as well. They also specialize in re-texturing hair, whether that means making frizzy hair straight via keratin treatments or making limp hair wavy and perky with a new-age perm. Day spa services include make-up applications, waxing, facials and skin care treatments for both men and women. Although the prices are upscale, the service is absolutely friendly and unpretentious, as is the industrial-style décor.
