Uncork'd Art's instructors invite artists of all skill levels to let their creativity flow while practicing no-pressure painting. During their adult classes, experienced local artists unlock latent talents with a complimentary glass of wine, a brought-from-home snack, and muses equipped with brass knuckles. Instructors lead students in painting experiments during Just For Fun sessions, and provided materials allow for the creation of acrylic-adorned masterpieces. Throughout the 6-week art- and wine-appreciation course, students learn theories and techniques, sample fragrant vinos, and produce three finished paintings. Uncork'd also offers private parties for groups of 10 or more, as well as happy-hour classes, which include helpful instruction with complimentary wine and supplies. Prospective pupils can schedule their next creative frenzy by perusing the online calendar.
The certified instructors at Bikram Yoga Capitol Hill pass on a series of 26 Hatha yoga poses and two breathing exercises developed by Bikram Choudhury. The 90-minute sessions coax oxygenated blood into action, which in turn stimulates the body?s organs, glands, nerves, and spark plugs. Each class takes place inside a heated studio to facilitate deeper stretching and to flush out toxins. Despite its intensity, Bikram yoga can be adapted for students of all ages and ability levels, including first-timers.
Dance Place first leapt onto the scene more than three decades ago as an educational and performing arts company that toured local schools. In the years since, it has grown into a multi-faceted operation and source of both entertainment and instruction.
Every weekend, Dance Place dazzles crowds with performances in modern dance, African Dance, performance art, and spoken word. Rather than hiring a sketch artist to doodle each dance step into a flipbook, spectators can learn the moves they see on stage by enrolling in one of Dance Place's programs, or by dropping into an adult or children's class. Dance Place has remained true to its roots through its continued support of local schools, and to this day organizes family-friendly performances, workshops, and school assemblies.
?We are not limited by four walls of a gym; we are only limited by our determination and imagination," declares Corey Belin, founder of Belin Sport & Fitness. This isn't empty talk from the fitness professional, either. Belin applies this philosophy to all of his programs, challenging his members to push themselves toward their goals during fitness boot camps, whether they want to lose weight or build the endurance to run an underwater marathon. He also gets pulses pumping with the Insanity workout, a program that uses a flurry of exercises to jumpstart metabolism and sculpt lean muscle.
To the fitness experts who run The P Spot Fitness Studio, pole dancing is much more than an art of seduction?it?s a means to a healthier mind, body, and spirit. Within their 2,000-square-foot space, instructors use the discipline?s sultry swings, dips, and lifts to sculpt tight physiques in pole fitness classes. They also deploy fast-paced aerobics and exotic dance moves in Hot in Heels classes, getting blood pumping without screaming ?Fire!? into IV drips. But lifestyle makeovers don?t end after class; a full slate of health services such as nutritional counseling, weight-loss camps, and a boot-camp getaway in the Caribbean weaves wellness into all aspects of life.
Since 1976 Joy of Motion Dance Center, a nonprofit arts organization, has strapped on its ballet flats to kick down the doors that traditionally bar people from learning dance. Since then, it’s won two Mayor’s Arts Awards, one for Excellence in Service to the Arts, and the other for Outstanding Contribution to Arts Education. In 10 studio spaces across three different locations, instructors teach adult and youth programs, and lead an outreach initiative that gives disadvantaged kids the chance to learn dance with free classes or merit-based scholarships. Additionally, the center holds performances and showcases where students and patrons get a taste of professional performance without having to become zombies.
