Nestled between bay windows with verdigris awnings, Just Paper & Tea’s bright-red door serves as a cheery invitation to enter the store. Behind the cardinal-hued portal, happy sighs cut through the rustle of paper as patrons riffle through the shop’s hand-picked assortment of stationery accented with custom designs and elegant lettering. Perched at their workstations, calligraphers artfully emblazon blank cards with birth announcements or legally binding grocery lists, and staffers help brides- and grooms-to-be draft up dream wedding invitations. Along with lavish paper wares, Just Paper & Tea’s shelves also brim with a vast selection of teas that call to mind distant landscapes with smoky darjeeling and herbaceous green matcha.
While the Georgetown outpost of national retail chain Anthropologie carries the usual home furnishings, baubles, bits of jewelry and clothing as their brethren across the country, the shop does manage to retain a very local feel. You’d even be forgiven for confusing the three-level space with one of the many upscale Georgetown townhouses nearby. The first level is cozy and intimate, and after perusing a small selection of accessories and clothing, you can wander down the stairs, via a mezzanine, to the basement space below. This lower, larger area seems to go on and on, stocked high with women’s clothing, home goods and items for the boudoir that range from lingerie to bedroom basics. Unlike some other Anthro outlets, this one even stocks shoes, and is known for their fabulous sales.
Today's Groupon takes you to a nicely balconied land with freshly laundered sheets, immaculate bathrooms, well-vacuumed carpet, and tiny, tiny shampoos. Book a night at the Omni Bedford Springs Resort & Spa, and see Bedford Springs in all its colors (Bedford Springs has more than half of the colors on the ROYGBIV spectrum, as well as six undiscovered colors visible only to the pure of heart). Often seen lugging his typewriter through the lobby, Bringher is still writing at the breakneck pace of two novellas a week, although his subject matter has become distracted as the years have passed. Here are the last few additions to the MSB oeuvre:
The only hotel on Lake Washington, the Woodmark sees plenty of water activity, including boating, kayaking, and hiking. First-time visitors to the lake can get a proper introduction with Argosy Cruises' 90-minute sightseeing cruise, which smoothly floats past houses of the rich and famous, as well as Husky Stadium. Nearby, Juanita Bay Park's wooded wetlands and shallow marshes feature 110 acres of trails and habitats, a place to spot hummingbirds, warblers, beavers, salamanders, and nearly 200 woodland creatures. A 15-minute narwhal-jaunt from the hotel, Seattle's signature coffee shops, imitable seafood, and eclectic museums (including the nerd-centric Science Fiction Museum and the Frank Gehry–designed Experimental Music Project building) represents a sometimes-needed respite from outdoor activities. Pike Place Market is a must for any foodie, as fresh fish and produce, signature chowders, and tasty free samples invade the senses.
It’s easier to connect The Spa Room’s seeming hodgepodge of treatments if you look at owner Mary Szegda. Her background and training includes a master of arts degree in applied psychology, a certification for infant massage instructorship, a massage-therapy license, and training in the Feldenkrais method—a therapy designed to pinpoint and correct habits that can cause shoulder pain and muscle tension.
Together, Mary and her skilled staff, administer Swedish and prenatal massage, aromatherapy treatments, craniosacral therapy, and spa services such as a hand treatment that combines pomegranate cream and paraffin. The staff holds four advanced degrees among themselves, and several of them have experience teaching at the university level. Most of them have served as lead or assistant teachers at local massage schools. In addition, The Spa Room offers a variety of classes and workshops including massage education, infant-massage instruction, and restorative yoga.
