Independently owned and operated by DC natives Erin Mara and Henriette Fourcade, the 2,500-square-foot loft-like space at homebody is filled with contemporary furnishings and home products. Quaff eco-conscious colas from a reusable Eco Can drinking bottle, with a biodegradable and BPA-free body that is safe for use in microwaves, dishwashers, and decommissioned Mars rovers ($14.50). Square meals can be squirreled away inside a Box Appetit lunch box ($24.95), which can be, in turn, slipped into a specially designed bag ($7.95). And inside the shop, eyeballs will get a chuckle from quirky doorstops shaped like leaves ($10 each), high-heeled shoes ($9 each), and members of the Partridge family. The store combines designs from renowned and up-and-coming designers, and benefits from the owners' combined 40 years of experience. Though not included in today's Groupon, homebody also adorns abodes with interior-design services.
Miss Pixie’s Furnishings & What Not keeps customers coming back with their “blast from the past” apparel and furnishings. Large windows draw customers into the granite floored shop with neon pink walls and unusual chandeliers. The massive vintage store on 14th Street carries everything from old photographs and lunch boxes from the 1950s to vintage mirrors and old lamps to old-school rotary phones, and that’s only the beginning. Miss Pixie’s also has Matchbox cars, old beer glasses and used books and records. Aside from these exercises in knick-knack nostalgia, the store is also a home decorator’s dream. Between the vintage furniture and the unexampled artwork, there’s enough funk here to furnish the most whimsical crib.
Design shops are a rarity in colorful Adams Morgan, but the eclectic nature of Skynear makes up for the dearth. Located in a Victorian townhouse built in the 1890s, Skynear Designs Gallery offers a modern and cool take on everything from furniture and artwork to jewelry and iPad accessories. While most of the handmade products are local, Skynear does sell one-of-a-kind, silk-screened Cuban movie posters, along with art from nationally-known painters. While not part of Skynear proper, a wander up the stairs will lead shoppers to a gallery featuring art from artists of various origin including South America. Skynear hosts once-a-month curated evening events, which often feature artists whose works are sold in the space.
Sitting at the intersection of interior design and fashion, Muléh stocks upscale, hip and modern collections of both clothing and furniture. The U Street corridor lifestyle store is funky and chic. The industrial-feeling interior houses clothing and accessories from fashion designers like Phillip Lim and Vivienne Westwood. Muléh also carries modern, arty and witty furniture lines from Kenneth Cobonpue, Hive and Argo. Muléh carries a unique mélange of furnishings that cater well to the recently gentrified neighborhood. This makes it easy for customers to create a place that is distinct and individual, even if the shop tends to run a little more expensive than some of the nearby stores.
