While cake isn't always a health food, it can be under the guidance of the bakers at Caked Up. They gather their ingredients from local sources to ensure a dessert's freshness as they create classic indulgences such as cakes, cupcakes, and bite-size lolli cakes. But their fresh ingredients are only half the equation. When something a little healthier is desired, they can swap out traditional flour for gluten-free grain or remove all traces of eggs, milk, and butter from the batter to cook up completely vegan desserts.

No matter what ingredients they use, the bakers always ensure that desserts bear beautiful designs. They can make easy swirls and flowers in frosting, or create custom designs that utilize fondant, cake shaping, and piped frosting. This allows every dessert, no matter if it's a tray of cupcakes or a tiered cake, to be the perfect centerpiece for a party or slapstick open-mic night.

Tucked into the front section of the Macomb Street location of Jetties, an around-town sandwich and salad shop, Something Sweet’s counter offers a minimalist selection of cookies, brownies and cupcakes. Decadent cheesecakes and looming layer cakes round out the offerings, along with a classic hummingbird cake and immense whoopie pies. Filled with light wood touches and lots of natural light, the minimalist space only seats a few, but that means more room for filled bakery cases. Check out the occasional one-off or special items from the hanging chalkboards or order online to select custom-made desserts and cookies. If you do happen to swing by the small space, at least you can enjoy the sunshine from one of several benches out front.

Despite the name, Cafe Olé’s menu is more of a nod to Middle Eastern food than Spanish cuisine. The reasonably-priced menu offers a variety of mezze (Mediterranean small plates), kabobs and Panini, alongside more than two dozen wines by the glass and several craft beer options on tap. A curvilinear bar makes for interesting indoor seating, while a scatter of tables throughout the space give ample room to other diners. A small patio is the perfect place to dine while lounging away a sunny afternoon, though a word of warning: Weekday lunch rushes can be crushing, thanks to nearby offices that crowd the fun, tasty restaurant. Dinnertime is much calmer.

Fans of Chinese hole-in-the-walls will go gaga over Little China Cafe in Palisades, tucked as it is into a basement space along MacArthur Boulevard. Traverse the brick steps into the front door and beyond, where simple wooden tables and a low roofline make for cozy dining. The slightly confined space may be the primary reason most eaters call ahead for deliver or takeout, but when lunch specials come in well under $20, it’s hard to quibble over décor. The usual assortment of Chinese fare – much of it given an Americanized turn – populates the menu, from pan-fried dumplings and fried rice to moo shu pork, Cantonese-style fish fillets and the Happy Family, a mélange of roast pork, chicken, shrimp, scallops and beef, among other things.
