The Little Gym fosters the healthy growth of children by allowing them to progress at their own pace in a nonthreatening, nurturing environment. As wee ones from 4 months to 12 years-old tackle challenges, overcome fears, and learn to confidently express their opinions about Platonic theory, The Little Gym's original music graces their ears and supports their lessons. The month includes four classes that let tots develop through weekly, age-specific curriculum, with programs including pre-school/kindergarten gymnastics, dance, sports-skills development, and karate.

Nearly 3.5 million Gold's members chart and aim for their fitness peaks, perspiring beneath the gaze of certified personal trainers or pedaling beside peers at cycling sessions. In a diverse lineup of group classes, patrons strengthen cores with Pilates, finger-paint pictures of ninjas in martial arts, and amp up heart rates along to the pulsating soundtracks of Les Mills routines. Many Gold's Gym locations stockpile futuristic amenities, such as cardio machines with individual iPod docks and televisions that help keep patrons motivated.

When David and Sheila Bath founded Leading Edge Gymnastics in 1990, they did so with a simple goal: to help kids build character through the sport they themselves were so passionate about. As their student base expanded and their programs flourished, that character-building mission remained. And along with self-discipline and positive thinking, the gym's students take home physical strength, agility, and really cool party tricks. The program now offers three levels for gymnasts, a competitive team for serious athletes, preschool programs such as Mommy and Me, and even birthday parties. Thus far, LEGA has five athletes attending college on full-ride college scholarships.

Q&A with Kimberly Smothermon, Coach And Owner

When and how did you first develop a passion for your work?

I started gymnastics when I was young and then started coaching, as I loved the sport and didnt want to leave it. I opened my own gym 11 years ago and have loved working with children. We are a non-competitive gym because I feel, after competing myself as a child, that too many hours in the gym isn't healthy. But gymnastics is a great sport. It helps in every other sport and is fun.

What is one fun, unusual fact about your business?

That we are a non-competitive gym with seven Exhibition teams that perform at schools. The teams ... range in age from five years old through High School.

What special training do you or your staff have?

Myself and several staff members are USA gymnastics members and have been to USA national congress several times. [We are] also first aid and CPR certified.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?

Our gym is a fun, and we teach in a loving and fun atmosphere. We love all children regardless of their age, size, or skill level.

Q&A with Kelly Donyes, Owner

Exercise is challenging, and people frequently give up on their fitness routines. How do you keep clients motivated?

Our motto is, "Fitness is fun the GYMagine way." Learning how to move your body forward, backward, sideways, and upside down gives our students exciting ways to be fit through gymnastics.

Sweating to the oldies is acceptable, but sweating to the blues less so. Do you find that certain styles and genres of music generate more intense workouts?

Music and exercise are a major part of everyone's fitness today. Once our gymnasts learn new skills, they need to keep repeating them so that they can master them. Repetition can seem boring at times, but [listening to] music can turn it into a fun process.

When and how did you first develop a passion for fitness?

When I learned my first gymnastics skill by myself, I wanted to do it again and again.

Is there anything else you want to add that we didn't cover?

Gymnastics is truly the best crossover sport for all sports. The balance, coordination, strength, and agility you learn can excel your performances in other sports and activities.
