To call The Body Shop a mere skin and body care store is to miss half of what makes it special. Late founder Dame Anita Roddick was a pioneer for ethical business practices; upon opening her first store in Brighton, England, in 1976, she developed company values such as "Defend Human Rights" and "Protect The Planet." She somehow balanced principles and profit, partnering in global campaigns with UNICEF, Greenpeace, Amnesty International, and the United Nations, all while ultimately expanding her brand into 2,500 locations in over 60 international markets. After her death in 2007, then-British Prime Minister Gordon Brown said, ?She campaigned for green issues for many years before it became fashionable to do so and inspired millions to the cause by bringing sustainable products to a mass market. . . . She was an inspiration.? Indeed, the Body Shop exhibits an eco-friendliness and social consciousness that's hard to come by in a company of its size. Its products have been fair-trade since 1987, and its Against Animal Testing movement led to an EU-wide ban of animal testing of cosmetics. The products are made from ingredients harvested from around the world: shea butter from Ghana goes into body scrubs and butters, and Indian artisans craft wooden massagers and tote bags that are screenprinted by hand. But all that isn't to say the company's production practices overshadow its final products. Skincare treatments such as the brand?s iconic body butters, facial products, and gift collections often appear in Allure, Marie Claire, Lucky, Seventeen and other national publications.

Each of the private tanning rooms at Sunny Buns Tanning Salon and Spa has its own personality—one is painted with the New York skyline, whereas another features distressed Greek-style columns and a decorative fountain. Inside, customers can choose from four levels of UV bed or a VersaSpa spray-tan booth, which adds color to skin without having customers throw on a swimsuit and run across a paintball field. In addition, the salon offers Dermalogica facials, haircuts and color, and massages.

The stylists, technicians, and aestheticians at 4Ever Nails & Salon have clients covered, whether clients want to upgrade their everyday do or desperately seek a way to pare down a morning makeup routine. Stylists are equally adept at cutting and styling hair for seniors as they are with adults, kids, and life-like ventriloquist dummies. Aestheticians concern themselves with hair residing below the hairline, waxing or threading away fuzz from the arms, brows, upper lip, and cheeks, and then turn their focus to skin, expunging impurities with steam and extractions and applying fruit masks to leave faces soft and kissable. Manicures and pedicures can last longer with coats of shellac or gel polish, which can resist chips for up to three weeks, while clients can throw away brow, lip, or eye pencils for good with the shop's permanent makeup services, which impart a subtle or sultry look that stays put 24 hours a day.

Zahniser complements her relaxing massages with detoxifying body wraps and fragrant essential oils. She also travels to clients' homes to spritz bodies with spray-tanning solutions or stage spa parties that furnish on-the-spot pampering for pre-wedding festivities or girls' nights out.

People who come to Mindy Harbaugh for a facial might notice the extra care she takes to match clients with the right treatment, as well as her joy in their successful transformations. Before opening Min's Day Spa, Mindy spent many years as a nurse, and her career working with patients helped shape her approach to client comfort as she transitioned into her new operation. Upon examining the service offerings of the spa industry, the career medical provider found that her skill set uniquely positioned her to raise the bar. With the goal of providing results-oriented beauty treatments, she compiled her menu of services that includes familiar spa staples such as rejuvenating body wraps, massages, and waxing, with technology-based offerings such as non-laser HydraFacial MD treatments. Seattle Hill Nails and Spa's staff calls upon more than two decades of experience every time they brush vibrant polish across fingernails or wipe away a face’s wrinkles. All of the spa’s guests—royalty or otherwise—are invited to sit in crimson pedi-thrones as technicians rejuvenate their feet with a sea-salt scrub and lower-leg massage. An even more relaxing experience unfolds during the signature pedicure, which adds a cooling mask and a dip in paraffin wax. The spa’s refreshing facials exfoliate and hydrate all types of skin; certain skin-specific facials target blemishes and discoloration resulting from acne, aging, and employment in the Blue Man Group.
