EMP Museum is a tribute to cultural icons as well as a breeding ground for the next generation of musicians and societal shapers. Here, attendees don?t just stand before exhibits that explore Jimi Hendrix and The Rolling Stones, but throw down their own musical chops in interactive exhibits such as Sound Lab, where they riff on an electric guitar, bang on drums, and tweak acoustics behind a mixing console. On Stage also gets guests to grip instruments, but under the hot lights of the stage, where they can pretend to entertain legions of fans or accompany their nephew?s birthday party.

The museum also curates rotating exhibits that celebrate modern cultural achievements. These have showcased the impact of Nirvana?s career alongside historic artifacts as diverse as Hendrix?s Stratocaster from Woodstock and Neo?s black futuristic coat from Matrix Reloaded. As home to the Science Fiction Hall of Fame, the museum also spotlights luminaries such as Ray Bradbury and Steven Spielberg, who have shaped a generation?s imagination while warning people about the perils of suppressing ingenuity, ideas, and viewpoints.

All of the educational programming and special events unfold inside the architectural jewel that is the EMP Museum. Designed by Frank O. Gehry, the building?s 3,000 stainless-steel panels shimmer and seemingly swing through the air. This fluidity, which can alter its appearance depending on the time of day and light conditions, is about ?reminding audiences that music and culture is constantly evolving,? as the museum?s website states.

What once began as a gerontology master’s project soon became a time-saving solution for homeowners across the country. In 2000, Spectrum founder and physical therapist Jenny Nelson became alarmed by the number of senior citizens she met with injuries caused by doing work around their homes. While pursuing her degree in gerontology, she made it her master’s project to found a care company that assisted seniors living on their own with tasks that weren’t simply health related. Soon thereafter, Spectrum Home Services was born and became Nelson’s life’s work.

By 2008, when Hal and Jeanette Fairless opened the Pacific Northwest franchise, Spectrum had grown to serve everyone, regardless of age or presence of free cake in the home. Spectrum’s original focus is still seen in its handyman services, through which techs specialize in building wheelchair ramps, installing grab bars and lifts, and performing ADA bathroom modifications. Cleaning crews come out weekly, biweekly, monthly, or as needed to tidy up living spaces, and organization specialists help remove clutter from busy lives. For local moves or seniors transferring to an alternative living facility, Spectrum’s relocation team will plan the project from start to finish.

One of the largest manufacturers and suppliers of paints in the Pacific Northwest, Parker Paint has been sprucing up interiors and exteriors since 1945. The company has evolved over the years to keep up with the latest advancements in painting technology. Among the multi-hued fruits of this evolution are weather-ready exterior paints, whose modern formulas scoff at the elements and prove ideal for realistic yet unflattering outdoor murals of the neighbors. With more than 1,600 shades to choose from, painters will find it nearly impossible to settle, like a bowl of jello during an earthquake. Luckily, customers can take advantage of the handy virtual decorator to narrow their choices and forecast what color schemes should be applied to which room, such as aquamarine themes for the exotic-fish room, bright primary colors for the inflatable fire escape, and a variety of yellows for a basement filled with antique butter churns.

Richard Jamieson's childhood spent in his grandparent's log cabin had a strong influence on his career. It instills his pieces of hand-hewn furniture with a rustic, old-school aesthetic also displayed by the three NFL players who still wear a leather, facemaskless helmet. As a former USMC officer, renowned marksman, sawmill operator, and world traveler, the carpenter draws from a lifetime of adventure to create intricate latticework carvings and exotic monsoon wood.

As he shapes his materials into dinner tables, drawers, and bed posts, Jamieson animates an ecologically sustainable philosophy. He retrieves his wood from responsible sources such as salvaged teak, overshading mango trees, and invasive meh trees that overrun Javan rainforests without even offering to pay part of the rent. The designer infuses each piece with a masterful craftsmanship that can impart not only an artistic composition, but long-lasting solid wood construction. Jamieson adds strong dovetail joints and a 10-step hand-finishing process that protect the luxurious planks of tropical hardwood for years to come.
