The doctor didn’t have good news for Laura. She was overweight and was diagnosed with high cholesterol, high blood pressure, asthma, and sleep apnea. She had lived long enough with aching joints, and decided a change was in order. On Laura’s birthday, she unwrapped a Zumba DVD set. The high-energy routine captivated Laura while helping her become a healthier, more fit individual. Now a licensed Zumba instructor herself, Laura helps others take control of their own health. The studio’s sound system blasts Latin music while students stomp, spin, and sashay their bodies through dance styles that include hip-hop and mambo.
As one longtime student says, "Jess doesn't care if you have three left feet." And it's probably this supportive and congenial attitude that earned?her spots on?Boston A-List as?Best Zumba Class?and RateYourBurn as one of the??10 Best Zumba Instructors for 2012. She approaches the dance-fitness hybrid sessions as a "feel-happy" workout, helping students of all experience levels feel welcome regardless of their natural rhythm. She only offers drop-in sessions, allowing students to come when it's convenient for them or when they've accidentally?sleepwalked? to the studio again.

The success of Zumba, the Latin-inspired dance-fitness program, begged for spinoff workouts. Today eight Zumba variations exist, seven of which are taught by the licensed instructors at The Z Spot. The troupe teaches original Zumba, as well as Zumba Toning, Zumba in the Circuit, Zumba Gold for seniors, Zumba Kids for youngsters, Zumba Sentao for an intense core workout with a chari, and, at an offsite facility, Aqua Zumba. Each workout engages exercisers with a mix of energetic rhythms, continuous motion, and support from other exercisers in the group.
