Organized and curated by the Maine Film Center, the MIFF has been celebrating local and international cinema since 1998. For nearly two weeks, the society fills the Waterville Opera House and Railroad Square Cinema with screenings, panel discussions, and catchphrase workshops for aspiring action stars. Every year, the festival presents a worthy performer with their forward-looking Mid-Life Achievement Award, which assures winners such as Malcolm McDowell, John Turturro, Ed Harris, and Terrence Malick that their greatest works are not necessarily behind them.
The storefront of Artworks Art & Frame, Inc. qualifies as a work of art in and of itself: its side wall is covered with an intricate mural of a Victorian home, and its front face features large reproductions of the most famous works of Seurat and Van Gogh. Within the store, every surface is covered with supplies for all disciplines, including reams of paper, paints in every hue, and temperamental watercolor paints that will only mix with Perrier. In custom framing services, you can enhance pictures, posters, and artwork with creative matting and hand-finished molding, as well as frames with gold- and metal-leaf finishes.

Since 1987, Maine Boats, Homes & Harbors magazine has celebrated and explored the unique culture and active lifestyle of living on the Maine coast. Their team of Silver Editorial Excellence Award–winning writers, photographers, and illustrators showcases Maine’s unique ecology, cuisine, and art through tightly crafted prose and vivid images in each issue. Readers travel to popular and lesser-known cruising grounds, peek at the work of yacht designers and artisan boat builders, and step aboard vessels ranging from dinghies to yachts to doomed cardboard rafts. The magazine’s life-on-the-water coverage also extends to the architecture of homes and gardens lining the coast and relives the historic events that built the region’s rich cultural heritage.

NaturaLawn of America devotes itself to caring for both lawns and the environment, eschewing harmful chemicals in favor of eco-conscious solutions. Natural, organic-based, and biodegradable products are administered to create healthy outdoor spaces that repel intrusive pests, such as fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and aging golf-course greens searching for a place to retire. Technicians determine the individual needs of each lawn to develop custom treatment plans, taking soil tests before enhancing lawns with zero-phosphorus fertilizers, seeding and aeration treatments, or regimens that focus on balancing nitrogen, potassium, and sulfur. The pest-control professionals also fight off invasive species, applying milky-spore grub control—which uses a naturally occurring bacteria—to evict Japanese beetles and European chafers. The lawn liaisons deter Lyme disease–carrying creatures with Tick Ranger and send moles on their way with biodegradable repellents or inside jobs to infiltrate the neighbor’s vegetable garden.
