The City of Wayne Parks & Recreation community center's indoor and outdoor fitness facilities bustle with adults and youth alike as they work toward healthier versions of themselves. Patrons annihilate calories on weight equipment and cardio theaters, along with equipment specifically designed to meet the needs of guests with neuromuscular and hypokinetic conditions. The center also hosts sporty activities within its indoor ice rink, track, and swimming arena, and its outdoor grounds roll out hiking trails, playgrounds, tennis courts, and soccer fields, which also double as covert chariot-racing arenas after midnight.
The certified instructors lead a schedule of fitness classes, which includes hula-hooping, boot camp, and karate, along with one-on-one personal-training sessions, in which they develop customized workout routines tailored to each client. As parents work out, they can leave their youngsters under the supervision of staff members in the interactive Kids Zone, complete with play structures and video games.
Torso-contortion coaches at Blazing Belly Dance teach the ways of meandering midriffs to aspiring hip-hypnotists ages 16 and up. During the course of four weeks, students tone their muscles, gain flexibility, and acquire the poise and seductive movements of football placekicker Adam Vinatieri. Each course culminates in level-appropriate choreographed dances so proud midsections can show off what they've learned.
At Forum Fitness Center, people build brawn in group classes hosted within a training facility replete with free weights, cardio machines, and a 60-foot indoor swimming pool. Fleet-footed exercisers can run laps around the ghosts of their slower selves on the indoor track, and those who prefer stationary exercise can sweat it out on cardiovascular machines. Iron pumpers can work with free weights—solo or under the supervision of personal trainers—to mold a physique more perfectly sculpted than Michelangelo's homemade garden gnome. Each week, the spacious studios house more than 25 group fitness classes, including yoga, Zumba, spinning, and Body Sculpt, during which thumping music scores a kinetic blend of weight-room exercises.
Our Students learn a great Self Defense Curriculum - combining the most effective and best of the martial arts in structured, disciplined, and exciting training classes. Our Karate Club is member of national e international organizations.
What services does your business offer and what makes your business stand out from the competition?
Most martial arts use air punches and choreographed moves...nothing that will actually work in the real world. We teach self defense that will actually save your life.
What's one tip for first-time students that will make them feel like veterans?
Our Monday class is for people who don't know anyone and have no martial arts experience. Wednesday and Friday is for people with martial arts training who want to learn and practice what actually works on the streets. Beginners can be in the advanced group in as little as four weeks.
What was the inspiration to start or run this business?
I am one of the seven highest ranking members of Tapi Tapi (counter for counter) fighting. I love the art of Modern Arnis and I want to teach it to everyone.
What do you love most about your job?
I am able to take someone who has always been afraid of an encounter and give her or him the self confidence that they could handle themselves in any situation. It's amazing what my students can do in such a short period of time!
Since 1968, Woodside Meadows Golf Course has tucked away plenty of opportunities for low scores among the lush bluegrass that covers it from first tee box to 18th green. A relatively short undertaking at 6,068 yards from the furthest of two tees, the layout pulls players into confrontations with four large ponds and two small ones during their round, allowing ample opportunity for a refreshing midround cannonball. Before teeing off, players can warm up on the driving range, and an onsite eatery offers snacks such as hot dogs to help players refuel.
Course at a Glance: * 18-hole, par 70 course * Total length of 6,068 yards from the back tees * Two sets of tees per hole
